Default Volvo 440 CVT Gearbox

Hi, I've owned quite a few 440's over the years which have been very reliable. I'm tempted to buy another which is a 1996 automatic having the CVT gearbox. Does anyone have any info on this gearbox eg are they reliable etc? Finding it very hard to find anything about them. Many thanks, Ian

Afraid I don't as such. All I do know is that it was seen at the time as a retrograde step (harking back to the old 340s) and didn't sell very well - accordingly short-lived.

Still, just because it wasn't well received doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't any good!

We had one for years, wife's mother had it from new in 95 and I inherited it when she passed away in 98. I wasn't a fan but the wife insisted we had it. But it was great and done us proud and made a bit of Volvos.
But the auto box was eventually it's dimise, it packed up but I had it rebuilt by an auto box specialist but it took him a couple of months and many strip downs better he found the problem. She then for another five years before it went again. There was no second hand units to found so so that was the end of her.
