8J Rims on a 2008 XC90?

Hi Guys,

It's been a while since I've been on the forum, but I'm facing a quandary and I thought the knowlegeble folks here might be able to help.

I have an opportunity to pick up some nice "Titania" rims off a more recent S60 and I'd like to put them on my 2008 XC90. Current rims are the "Atlantis" type, which are 18" x 7J. I've now realized that the ones I want to grab are 18" x 8J.

I'm sure that my 235/60/R18 tires are fine on those rims, but just wondering if the extra inch in width on the rim will have clearance problems.

I called Volvo and the guy in the parts department said it should be fine, but my mechanic says he's not sure.

Anyone know for sure?

More importantly before buying them, have you checked the diameter of the centre spigot hole?


Many Volvos use a spigot hole smaller than the XC90 so even if the stud holes lined up, the wheel would not go on .

I've checked the bolt pattern (5x108) and that's all good. Are you suggesting that the bolt might not fit through the holes? Hadn't thought of that...I thought it was standard. Or do you mean the nuts might not fit?

Ahhhh. Okay. I just figured out what you mean and it totally makes sense. They won't fit! You're right.

The S60 has a centre bore of 63.4mm and the XC90 is 67.1mm. That's a big difference. I knew someone here would be able to help. It's a shame because I was thinking that they'd look pretty cool.

Neither, the single large hole bang in the centre of the wheel. Many Volvo's have this in a smaller diameter to the XC90 and if that is the case the wheel will not seat. 👍

Another thing to bare in mind for future reference is the offset of the alloys themselves, which is stamped on them as 'ET' with a number after it. So for example, an alloy that says 'ET50' on it has a 50mm offset. So if you fit a set of alloys with a different offset to what was recommended for your particular car, then that can causing handling issues.

Also, you can fit an alloy with a bigger centre bore to a car with a smaller one using spigot rings, providing the lug bolt pattern is the same (Known as 'pcd'). These are common & its not unusual to see them fitted to cars that have aftermarket wheels, as normally, they're mass produced with centre bores that are big enough to fit a variety of different vehicles. From an aftermarket alloy manufacturing point of view, doing this saves producing individual wheels for different makes/models of car & that's where spigot rings come in. They sit inside the centre bore of the wheel & basically fill in the gaps between the size of the alloy you purchase to the size of the hub on the car you're fitting them to, providing the lug bolt pattern is the same. They reduce vibration & make sure that the wheel is sitting correctly on the hub - They work great.

I know this doesn't apply to you as such now because you can only fit spigot rings to alloys that have a larger centre bore than the car you're fitting them to & providing the bolt pattern is the same on both vehicles, not the other way around.

So lets just for an example say you wanted to fit the XC90 alloys to the S60 & both vehicles had the same lug nut pattern & the offset was the same, but the centre bores on the wheels you took off were larger than the hub on the car you wanted to fit them to (I know they don't & this isn't what you want to do, but just purely as an example). You could buy a set of 67.1mm to 63.4mm spigot rings (They're two-sided, one side being larger than the other in diameter). Then, you'd fit the spigot rings inside the centre bore of each of the alloys off the XC90 (Larger side of the spigot ring would fit inside the centre bore of the XC90 wheel) & the smaller side of the spigot ring alloys you to fit the wheels to the smaller hub on the S60.

Again, I know it doesn't apply to you at this moment in time because it simply wouldn't work. However, its handy to know for future, particularly if you want to buy some aftermarket wheels.
