Headlight wipers aren't testable for MOT on a car of this age, that's only a recent addition.

It's hard to know. If you're on a budget and hoping to buy and drive with no problems for years I wouldn't be looking at an old high pressure turbo Volvo. Though reliable, they can throw up some big bills and this model mostly depends on Volvo parts which can be expensive.

The best looked after S40 T4 I know of had every MOT and service at Volvo since new with only one owner for 11 years and lasted to 217k miles with just general wear and tear, it was a brilliant car. Things then started to go down hill a bit and would have cost a lot to put right, valve stem seals were worn, emissions went bad, exhaust rotted, shocks begun to fail - The whole car had essentially had enough.

Should give you an idea of how much life is left in it without any major bills - If you're lucky

To be honest I'd be happy to get 20k more out of it and I'd consider it worth it.

I got my 1997 Vv40 T4 back in October for £700. 80k miles. Full service history and receipts of over £20k...

Needed tracking doing, fuel pump and only has 1 key fob. I absolutely love it, it's a 23 year old rocket that surprises alot of the newer, less characterful boy racer cars out there today and I can go the tip in it too.

I'd go for it as they're less and less common nowadays so could be viewed as an investment...

If your worried about the turbo going i have one that you can buy for like 1/2 the price of a new one, genuine oem volvo part, straight from volvo themselves, only has about 2k miles on it

There are not many about but when looking keep your search wide to cover ALL S40 and V40 models since some people unintentionally misdiscribe them as just a 2.0 or 2.0t rather than the T4 version.

If you can see the number plate then a quick check online could get you a bargain.

.... and yes, it's worth keeping on looking, they're worth it.

My first T4 cost £400 from a friend who had it sat in his Garage for a couple of years not using it. A new set of brakes, full service and new tyres got me going. My second one cost me £500 with 10 months MOT, I planned on restoring this and building a nice one out of the two cars I had. As people already know, you take the wing off and the rest of the car falls with it in tiny rust pieces.

My cars were cheap, but they both were on the borderline of being scrap. I'd still say it's one of the most fun cars you can buy for around a grand. And once you have driven one, you'll stay attached to them. I got rid of my black one after taking all the parts off it, but I can't bring my self to get rid or part my first one. I'm just hoping that one day I'll pick up the tools and get it running and sort that rust out once and for all.
