Is the sensor in the diff cover plate? If so, can you change that - instead of the whole axle?

Anyway, glad you have (nearly) fixed it after all your troubles! Well done for seeing it through; I'm sure this thread will help others in the future.

we tried that but i suspect that the tone ring is the fault despite a volvo specialist telling me it wasnt!!

the axle im getting is fully working and comes with the speedo so in theory it will work

I also have a problem getting my speedo to work. The sender on the axle is showing a rising in ACV when driving. I even tried a trick using a low voltage AC/AC adapter but still the speedo doesnt work. Even using other speedo's they dont work either.

U say on the back of the speedo there are 3 wires, 1 is a swithed 12v and the other two come from the sender on the axle. There is no earth. I heard someone else calling the back wire the earth but the whole cluster is getting its earth on the "half moon" connector. Am I missing something?

that black wire going to the three way plug should be earth , for some reason back in the day it would loose it's earth . If you splice a wire in and run it to earth it should then work ..
