It might be the case that if you are programing a fob, the car doors need to be closed when you do it? I've been lucky with fobs so far, but they do die!

Hi, all the doors were closed when it wouldn't re-program and I was immobilised from starting. I checked several times that all doors were closed as I knew that would stop it from re-setting but they were all definitely closed.

Do all your doors bring the interior light on Ellie? I've got a silly little niggle in the back of my mind about this.

I can't remember what car it was on or even if it was a Volvo but it was the right sort of age and the alarm wouldn't reset, similar to how yours is not resetting/learning.

I wasn't actually doing the job, it was my boss doing it but i stuck my head in to try and learn something and it turned out the owner of the car had switched the interior lights off so they didn't come on when the doors were opened.
When they had a problem with the alarm and had to reset it, it wouldn't reset as the voltage swing on the inputs to the alarm wasn't high enough.

Given the fact many manufacturers bought their electronics from just one or two electronics manufacturers, it could well be Volvo got the Guard2 system from the same people as made the system that wouldn't reset on whatever car this was.

If so, it's definitely worth checking and getting the interior light to switch on and off with each door.

To explain what i mean about one or two electronics companies making things for different car manufacturers, think about the fuel injection system, Bosch made the same system for Volvo, Saab, VAG, Mercedes, BMW, GM/Vauxhall/Opel/etc, Ford and several other brands.
If Bosch also made the Volvoguard II system, it's highly possible they made the alarm on whatever car was in the workshops that day (think it was a Saab or a Merc but can't remember) but it's equally as possible that it could be a Valeo system and that it was Renault Laguna in the workshop that day. Rover used the same system as the Renault models from about 86-96 so you can see why i'm looking at this option.

Hi Dave, yes, my interior lights were set not to come on when the doors open! I've got them so they come on now. So next time I have the problem caused by fob/system it will be interesting to see if the reset works first time! Cheers!

I have at the back of my mind that the door switches support a separate circuit for the alarm so the setting of the internal light could be a red herring. I may be wrong since it’s a while since I had to fiddle with them. The door switches, which of course make a connection to earth through the screw which holds them in, do play up after 20+ years. They can usually be revitalised by cleaning off any corrosion around the screw but occasionally need to be carefully dismantled and their internal contacts cleaned too. If the internal lights are ever a bit reluctant to switch on when the door opens the chances are the switches are corroded.

You may be right and it is a red herring, it's about 25 years ago i was doing that particular job (or i should say my boss was) so it's a bit of a shot in the dark. Worth checking nonetheless as some other alarm systems rely on registering a voltage drop when the doors are opened and shut to trigger the alarm so it may not be reading that voltage drop especially if opening and/or clsing the door is part of the rest procedure, even if cunningly disguised as "get in the car and close the door and switch the igntion on within 5 seconds" as i remember from one procedure although i think that was actually for resetting the idle stepper motor on something.

Since I configured the interior lights to go on and off with the door openings I haven't had any more problems with my fob / immobiliser. Surely this cannot be a co-incidence so I think you were right! CHEERS!
