Hello.

The official manual is known as the Green Book. It can be consulted online at http://www.volvotips.com/index.php/2...ervice-manual/ Check carefully before clicking links on that site. Some are NOT download of the book.

On my 1992 240SE B200F the head bolts are stretch bolts and cannot be used again.

I hope that helps you.

Have you checked the online Green Book? I haven't needed to yet.
You wanted an answer from a genuine workshop manua and that online resource was posted, for youl. Does it help? I hope it does.

My Haynes manual says there are two kinds of bolts - "normal" looking straight-sided with hexagon heads, and slimmed bolts that take a hexagonal recessed Allan key. The earlier kind are reusable, the later can only be re-used 5 times.

Are the stretch bolts a third kind? What do they look like - can you visually distinguish them from either of the first two kind? Are they the kind that you tighten to a specified torque, then an additional amount of degrees?

I must admit that some years ago I'd never heard of stretch bolts, and just replaced them on my 240 to the specified torque as I'd always done with any head bolts. It never gave any trouble.

I do notice though that engines have gradually got more complicated over the years. Long ago you just tightened them up in the proper order to the specified torque, and then round again for luck.
A Triumph Stag I did once you had to tighten them to a lower figure, then partly release them, then tighten up to a higher figure, then round again to the proper full figure. And finally a re-check after getting the engine hot.

The early 10mm allen head bolts to be reused many times.

The later 14mm socket head ones can be used 5 time provided they have not stretch past the limit

Having referred to my manuals .... ahem yes Clifford and Classic Swede. Later bolts, the hex head ones, re-use up to five times if not stretched beyond their limit.

My remnants of memory understanding must have been based on a decision when I did the job .... I probably decided that as one does not usually know how many times bolts have been tightened, that means use new bolts in my opinion.

It will be interesting if V40 Shooting Brake tells us what they found in the online Green Book ... official manual.

yes that's what i remember from the volvo manuals too . It was/is unheard of for one to have a head off more than 5 times in it's life !

...if the head bolts may be used 5 times: it strikes me that even if one does not know the history of a motor, the chances of the head having been off and re-fitted more than a couple during its life would be infinitesimally small, even if the car has covered 300.000 miles. I'd feel absolutely safe re-using the bolts another time (or two).

:-)

If you need to have the head off five times in a row, get new bolts.
Better off spending the money on a decent calibration certificated torque wrench.
