Question need advice on tyres and the transfer box

hi . im new to the volvo v70 xc i have, its a 1999 in clean condition. 2 owners . i have just had it through mot and got it all ready for winter. i got 4 tyres but 2 did not come when mot was done, so i had to drive home with 2 new tyres on front. back are still legal but side walls cracked. i now have a funny smell like mybe burnt auto gear oil .comes and goes , but no leaks and car drives ok. could the tyres be a problem ?the front are 205 65 15 old rear tyres are 205 60 15 . i will have the other 2 tyres soon , but not sure if i might have allready done the damage.? i have seen a few threds on transfer box problems. some talk about tyres.

You are supposed to keep all your tyres within 2mm dia of each other and do regular rotations. (You did say yours is a 99 ie classic)

Default think i need transfer box

the car is a 1999. i think my transfer box has gone. is it possible to remove the prop to the rear and drive as front wheel only? i will be looking for a transfer box when i get the bill cleared for the last load of work done. any one have an idea of how much and where i can get one. im in edinburgh, allready got 2 ex volvo mechanics i can get to fit it, so that will help for repair cost.
