S80: Electrical LED running lights

Hi, Have just replaced my front running bulbs with LED versions! While the headlamp units where out of the car I turned on the lights and the o/s one worked! So I carried on with the n/s unit, Turned them on again and none of them worked! Have tried turning the bulbs but they still don't work! Is it because the car doesn't read the bulb's as the bulb warning on dash is coming on!

Yes, the car is sensing the bulbs aren't pulling enough current and therefore assuming they're faulty. It then disables the "faulty" lights.

There's a few options - "CANBUS" friendly LED's (not actually anything to do with canbus but it's a common mistake now that everyone is either unaware of, or doesn't care!)

Loading the LED's you've got with an additional resistor/load. This "fools" the system into thinking the bulbs are pulling more current than they are. Downside of this is that the resistors can and do heat up and they dissipate the heat/current.

So - Easy answer, source some more LED's that are "CANBUS" aware or ask someone else on here what they're using successfully without the bulb warning/disabled bulbs!

The ones I bought where quoted as 'error free' but could have been a sales ploy! You live and learn!

I used these in my previous V70.
Worked with no issues and a good match to the factory Bi-xenons.

In their defence some cars can be particularly sensitive to this. The same bulbs that produce an error in one car can be absolutely fine in another. I have a C Class that was VERY fussy. Tried at least three brands with no joy. Bought some from a Merc Forum member and they worked a treat.


Often (and I shudder to recommend) the Halfrauds bulbs are made by better manufacturers (OSRAM etc...) and cause fewer issues. They also sell this (https://www.halfords.com/motoring/bu...d-resistor-kit) which will sort the issue of yours if you wish to keep the bulbs - but whichever way...it's more money to spend I'm afraid!
