Engine system service required 097

My 2008 D5 XC70 has started displaying the 'Engine system service required' warning when starting and attempts to reset (via the trip button and start/stop button sequence) do not remove the warning but result in '097' being displayed on the dash.

I've done a bit of reading and it seems to be a bit of a classic D5 issue relating to overfilling the sump. I gather that 097 actually refers to an air sensor error (either air intake temp or O2 sensor, I'm not sure) but that this can be triggered by the car burning/recycling oil from the sump as a result of the level being too high.

This seems plausible as I did an oil change two weeks back and, though I was careful not to overfill the sump, it did end up sitting around 3/4 rather than the 2/3 recommended on the little sticker.

I've drawn some oil off and taken it for a spin but no joy so far. Hopefully it will reset in time but I've bought myself a cheapo OBDII code reader from ebay so I can use that if I have to.

Anyone else seen an issue like this one? I'm hoping not to have to replace any parts.

Also, as a cautionary note, if doing your own oil changes, it seems safer to put in about 1/2 way up the dip stick rather than risk being over the 2/3 mark.

Hi Just had the same problem with my V70 D5 . The garage I bought it from had it serviced with all the belts replaced It was fine when collected and during the 100 plus mile trip home . The next start up the " engine service required " message came up . I tried to reset with button several times but got the 097 code . The car was running perfectly so decided to check the oil level as I had read on a post that this can cause problems . It was filled to the top mark on the dipstick ! I drew off 1/2 a liter that took it to about half way between the top and bottom marks . I drove it for about 20 miles and the message stayed on so booked into volvo to get it checked . The the next couple of day driving added up to about 200 and the message turned off so cancelled trip to volvo. All lights and messages normal now . I don't know weather this is normal but it worked for me .
Give it time to reset itself as its better than spending £80 plus vat at main dealer for resetting.

I've bought a cheap obdii reader/reset device from eBay so will try resetting if it doesn't sort itself in a couple of hundred miles. I've only done about 40 since reducing the oil level so it might need a few more miles yet.

Hi I did exactly the same thing , I think its an Amtel unit . I did the check for faults and it said "no fault" but the message was still there. As I had by then booked it into Volvo to sort I thought I would let get on with it but it cleared a day or so after so as said I cancelled the appointment with volvo. Its still running OK .

That makes sense. I'd read a couple of other posts where people commented on 'historical fault codes' where the fault has cleared but it just takes a while for the 'flag' to be reset on the system.

Either way, if I try the OBDII reader (Autel Maxiscan) and find there is no fault code then I can be more confident that there really is no underlying problem that requires dealership attention.

I have the same problem on my 2008 S80 D5. I topped up the oil levels a day or two before the message "Engine System Service Required" popped up and suspect I may have added too much.
How can I remove some oil, without going to the extreme of taking out the sump plug, catching all of the oil (in something) and then trying to get most of it back in via the oil filler cap ?

Put some washer tubing down the dipstick and suck until you can siphon off into a bottle. Be careful not to get a mouthful of oil.

I did mine this way and it worked fine. Warning will disappear after after 20-50 miles or so.

This seems to work.
I recently had my 2007 Volvo S80 D5 serviced at a Volvo dealership. Three days after I got the “Engine System needs servicing” warning. I noticed zero difference in driving or performance. I called the dealers. They were not much help to be honest and I had trusted them and used them since 2004 (over numerous Volvo cars ) but they have changed hands and are now part of a corporate national dealership that does not specialise in Volvo- so I am now not using them anymore.
I checked this forum. I then checked my dipstick. Oil level was very high, if anything slightly over the maximum.
I bought a syringe with a long thin tube attached (Amazon £8.99). I then extracted about one and a half coke bottles full of oil via the dipstick filler. The standard one drink coke bottles, so about 375ml in total. Two days after I did this the warning stopped appearing.
So thank you for the advice.
It was impractical to take my car back to the dealer who serviced it (about a 190 mile round trip – long story why-) and I also felt sure they would charge me for what I thought was their error and simply “make stuff up” as to the reason why I had this warning message. Had the car behaved any differently to normal then I would have consulted a dealer.
But this worked. Merely extracting some oil to get it below the maximum did the trick.

I have had the same issue, 3 days after oil change, engine service came on, I dropped oil level so it sits just below 1/2 way between maximum and minimum, have driven for 400 miles and the warning is still up. I have tried a reset on a cheap obd2 reader but it wont reset. Its a 2009 xc60 d5. My next step was going to be, drain oil completely and refill. Does anyone have any other suggestions. Performance is not affected in any way, the car drives really well.

It will go off eventually if you have removed enough oil.
