Default Fault code 097 system service required - engine in limp mode

Hi I just been reading this thread about fault code 097, and the message engine system service required. I have a 2010 V70 2.0L desire. Not only have I got the message and fault code, my car goes into what I have discovered to be called ‘Limp Mode’.
We are currently on holiday in Scotland heading home on Saturday, I’m looking for advice as to what to do, I guess some reassurance that this is all normal and drawing off oil will sort it. I’ve checked my dipstick on it is a touch over max level.
I can clear the message and take it out of limp mode by pressing and holding the trip button till I hear a beep, then when I restart the car, everything is fine, unless I take my rpm count over 2500, sometimes it’s just 2000.
Thanks
Mark.

Default Message 097 will reset itself

I just had the same problem: a garage put in too much engine oil, after 200km the message „engine service required 097“ popped up. Pumped some oil out. Then I could not reset the computer, but after approximately 500km the system reset itself, no more message now. It takes quite a long time until the message disappears but it will finally happen. It’s a Volvo V70, 2.4 litre Diesel D5 from 2007.

Turns out the problem was a split air hose. So the computer was getting a false reading. All this technology and it can’t tell you when it’s a simple split.

Thanks, All, for this thread. My 2009 v70 just had the same problem. Local garage scanned for faults but there were none so they cleared the message for me. Really helpful to know about the oil level issue. I’ll check mine tomorrow.

I've had the same problem with my 2009 2.4 D5, twice both times after being serviced. As stated above problem was too high oil level, drain off some and error resets.

Hi all, how safe is it for the engine 2.4 diesel to drive back to the garage to take out the oil with oil level higher (I have 1/3 higher level between min and maximum from the maximum level) ? I need to do about 15 miles of driving back to the garage with 20-30 miles per hour speed limit.

Doubt it’s a problem if it is just the oil level. I’ve driven my XC70 a good few miles with that problem.

I’m told it can also happen when the DPF regenerates and dumps fuel in the sump. Sounds odd to me but I’m not a mechanic!

There are other threads on this issue, if you search for “Engine System Service” you should find something.
