I have a 2002 V70 and at 105k my EGR valve was all blocked up and the inlet plenum was the same. I was horrified as it looked like the old "black death" syndrome. Anyway I cleaned it all out (and yes you can re-use the injector pipes) and blanked off the egr. I have now done 163k and the inlet is still spotless and no more crap is going into my engine which is still sweet, drives well and passes MOTs no problem. No alarms or warnings at all.

Dave

I'm thinking about doing the whole thing actually. Did you need to do anything special when removing the injector pipes? Did it drop fuel all over the place?

I'll be replacing my fuel filter and turbo inlet hose at the weekend so will be in tinker mode and might give it a bash.

Actually I took the rubber hose from the IC to plenum mixer pipe off and that was surprisingly clean. Makes sense I suppose as the air is flowing into the top of engine away from the IC.

These EGR valve things are a monumental waste of everyone's time really.

Photos make it look bad, and it was I suppose. Strangely the car runs as smooth as you like and reports 42mpg average which is bloody good for my style of driving....auto too.

I'd love to take mine off, but as it's a 2005 (185) it's a lot more complex and would take me a lot longer than 1 hour, even assuming I could get everything back on without triggering any errors.

I might ask my local to take it out and show me
