Default EGR blank

Hi all. Just blanked off EGR past the valve at the pipe side. Next day ECU started spazing out and chucking 'engine system service required'. Now, didn't read the code yet but I suspect it will be insufficient egr flow. I read in other posts that I need TWO plates to blank it off properly. Is that so I don't get the message? There are no drivability issues, the car drives better and does not smoke at all, all I get is an annoying message. How is the ECU detecting the gas flow? Is the system on 2.0D electronic or vacuum controlled?

Someone has mentioned before that you can only do it on the euro 3 models.

Ah. Mine is euro 4. In that case there must be a pressure sensor or something...

Unfortunately, that is true. Only Euro III EGR valves can be blanked off without the ecu punning over it, however I do remember reading somewhere that some people got away with blanking on a Euro IV?

Anywayz, blanking at the proximal end of the valve is mandatory, blanking at the distal end is optional ... it only prevents third-spacing, either way you'll get the msg on the dash.
Btw., I hope you disconnected the EGR valve too by pulling the plug, no point feeding it an electric impulse since it has been blanked off.

There must be a way of fooling the ECU into thinking that all is well.

I believe mine is Euro 4 and i blanked off at the back of the engine and disconnected the EGR Valve from the ECU and all is ok, i have noticed an increase in MPG too.

Default My egr story.

Hello all,

I ordered my ERG blank the other day and got round to fitting it today. I also had the same system message on the computer. Car sounds and runs fine with the blank in. I then took a little drive down to my local Volvo dealers where a friend of mine works to ask his advice and here is what he says....

'Blanking the EGR wont do any damage to the engine, all you may get is a smell from the engine and very bad emissions. Unless the EGR was playing up I wouldn't block it even if it does improve the engine and supposed turbo spool'.

I then asked his personal opinion and what would he do?

'Personally I would remove the blanking plate, other than stopping the EGR from getting clogged up there isn't really and benefits from having it blanked off, after all at the end of the day the engine was configured to work with the EGR and re-burn the fuel when it passed through the EGR and back into the cylinders'.

All in all I done about 3 miles with the blank plate in and I cant say there was any difference what so ever and then went about removing the plate and the system message then went back to normal but some may not have that luck and need it resetting (at a cost).

I think your friend, working for Volvo, is in a position where he feels obliged to tell you to remove the plate.
I don't get this bit about "re-burn the fuel". It can only be a tiny bit if any in my view, and putting exhaust fumes back into the engine cannot be good for it. But, we are all fed the propagander to think its all in a good cause.
