no start
Hi folks, happy new year. i loaned my 240 auto glt to my son while i was doing a little bodywork on his car, when i went to collect the volvo he informed me it would'nt start. i thought it might have been a fuel pump issue as it has to be cranked a while before it fires, but no when i checked for a spark i got no spark and plugs were damp with fuel i dried plugs and tried again car spins over ok but won't even try to fire, any ideas oh the car is a 1988 model as far as i can tell does not have a crankshaft position sensor

As “part” of the investigation I would check the rotor arm: ~ some are absolute rubbish (not just Volvo) Beru are ideal & usually give very little trouble—all other electrics dist.-cap & leads also coil but generally they have a long life. (Go for the obvious first but I’m sure you know that!)

If it's not rotor arm / dist. cap etc, could be the crank sensor. Fiddly but easy fix.

There’s not a lot that stops these from starting.... famous last words.
Try all of the above for sure. Can you hear the fuel pump priming when ignition on before you crank? If not suspect fuel pump relay. Easy cheap fix. Assuming it’s injected, guessing K-jet here

If the engine is as pictured then I believe these do not have a crank case sensor: ~ I have the same model and its free from this complication, It may also be worth checking that the auxiliary air valve is functioning properly i.e. open when the engine is cold & on gradual warm up the valve begins to close – luckily these engines are uncomplicated as previously stated so a methodical approach should get you back to heaven!

Its correct that wont have a crank sensor as its run off the distributor.
My father in-laws 240 2.3 petrol 1988 Volvo died on the MOT test ramp, it passed and then wouldn't start when they tried to move it at the end of the test. If you are getting fuel but no spark (same situation we were faced with) we looked at the ignition system and I spent ages removing the wiring loom, cleaning, checking for breaks before changing the ignition control module (behind the nearside headlight). £23 (using their discount code) from Eurocarparts and it roared into life. One happy father on-law that was for sure. Last edited by paul_a_uk; Jan 21st, 2020 at 22:11. |
