Hi George
Nothing against a felt. I'll boil them in Standart grease in front of mounting them.
You could even use thick oil
Semi-fluid grease, like fire steering boxes.
I wouldn't dismantle immediately. Sometimes the felt got closer by running. You have to remove a lot to do this
Most important is the open small hole between the two "rings" at the bearing housing.
At the end of the crank should be a "disc" as a centrifugal oil separator. This lives into on of these "rings". The oil has to run out of this easily
Good luck, Kay

On post 61 Derek did post a pic. You will clearly the rectangular hole at the bottom.
At post 69 I see something strange. The felt seems to be in the inner groove "ring"
Did you place the felts in the inner ring?
The crank would be turn really hard if you did this.
Sorry, I did read very fast your other thread now. My father got really sick (and old) , most time in my life now is to take care about my parents.
Good luck, Kay

Hi, at the front timing gear seal yes, but not at the rear. There are two channels on the rear seal carrier the front one for felt but there is nothing at the rear one. I asked about the two channels on here some time ago but no one knew the reason. Doesn't show any thing in the parts book or in the workshop manual.

Had second thoughts about this. Remembered that the plug at end of cam shaft came out and I replaced it, probably not securely enough.Either way, ordered new plug and felt,it can only be one or the other. Should the new plug if it's that be refitted with loctite and if so which one?

arcturus;

If leak is indeed caused by oil gallery plug, I'd recommend a sealer (which will also keep the plug in-place), not a threadlocker, which you might regret later. I can't give any advice on the seal as I am not familiar with the tallow cord style, but there must be best practices recorded somewhere (service manuals probably), as these were typical and standard for years before felt ring or neoprene modern seals became de rigueur.

Cheers

Hi George, please correct me if I'm wrong

on this pic
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/attac...0&d=1575804749

you did the felt into the inner "ring" "groove" I won't remember the correct word in english.

on this pic
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/19180...-1/s-l1000.jpg
is a crank of a B16

the "disc" on the crank at the end towards the flywheel is a centrifugal device to get the oil away from the felt

This dosc should be placed into the inner "groove" "ring" of the cap where half of the felt is into

IIRC this. My last B16 I hvae done is about 20 Years ago :-(

If I remember your pics correctly you did place the felt into the inner side, it should be placed at the outer side. Even if the centrifugal disc is placed outside this housing.
Others with more knowledge of the B16 will chime in please

Good luck, Kay

P.S. hopefully I'm wrong, you have to get out the engine and the crank otherwise :-(

Hi, According to the manual and parts book no separate disc is shown. The outer groove (towards flywheel) is too narrow for felt My felt seal was inserted in the groove furthest from the fly wheel ,towards the front of engine. The engine is coming out any way so I will double check.BTW hope your father is recovering. My best wishes to him.
