Default 55 s40 2.0D - strange clunking noise

Hello all,

I've got a 55 plate s40 2.0d, and over the last couple of days the engine seems to have developed a strange non-rythmic but regular rattle/clunk at idle, which goes away when the gearbox is engaged to the engine or the clutch pedal is depressed.

Any ideas?

Could easily be the DMF bearing.

Does it sound anything like this?

http://youtu.be/4NJv4tCmjto

Thats my V70 D5 exhibiting DMF noise.

It goes away when they gearbox oil is hot.

Thank alot for the reply and video, Sounds exactly like that only not nearly as frequent, same kinda noise tho so must be on its way out, which means it'll be expensive at a garage!

How difficult a job is it the drop the gearbox on these? Haven't done much work on them yet.

No idea on a S40, sorry. Expensive on a S60/V70 though - £600-1000 depending on how much you replace.

I am driving mine to destruction - having read around the forums its quite possible to drive them like this for 50k+ miles. Then again it might only make 5k........

It depends how much the car is worth / worth to you etc...

If my memory serves me dealership labour 300-500, the dmf itself is about £300, I would also think of doing the clutch at the same time.
