Hi, new to the forum and hoping someone can anyone advise if they have had to pay for a diagnostic at the dealers for engine check light when it seems it is a known fault with the EGR.

Al the repairs and faults to date have been done under warranty, though there will be some cars about to run out warranty starting now.

I assume your car is less than 3 years old in which case warranty will apply, if it is older and out of warranty then the fault here doesn't apply as you won't have the VEA engine

Had mine repaired at the Bristol Dealer this week (City Motors). Had the check light go on & off a couple of times over the last couple of weeks then went into tortoise mode last weekend (came back out on next restart).

Dealer seemed very good about the situation. I asked for a copy of the paperwork on collection which he did for me. He said they were doing a few every day and had done 7 in one day once! Mine went at just over 20k miles and at about 2.5 years old. I've had new radiator, pipework & valve. Warranty cost shows it at around £850 repair.

I asked what would of happened if it went after warranty had expired and the dealer said that as a known fault Volvo would still honour the repair at their cost.... We'll see when that gets tested by someone I guess!

Happy that mine has hopefully had the permanant fix in time, fingers crossed!!!

Once Volvo accept something as a known fault they have historically been pretty good at taking responsibility out of warranty, though they take into account the mileage that has been obtained from the offending parts. Under EU consumer law they are obliged to of course. When we are out of the EU I would expect them to honour UK consumer laws. They are regarded as one of the best car manufacturers for honouring such claims.

Hi, is your car still in warranty? If it is, then you definitely should NOT be asked to pay, or have to pay, for a diagnostic check at a Volvo dealer.

If it's out of warranty, then it's up to the dealer.

Just had the EGR fix done on mine 46k and 2.5 yrs old. Engine light came on a
couple of times recently but no performance issues but keen to get the fix before out of warranty. No problem getting fix done. Total cost would have been £830. EGR valve £382 EGR Cooler £332 Hose kit £88 and Anti Freeze £24
etc.
So for those coming up to end of warranty worth getting done at first hint of a light.

Now just got to fork out for rear discs and pads at 46k!!!!!!

Remember in England you are covered by the not fit for purpose laws for 6 years in Scotland it is only 5 years.

Yes, just had my "definitive fix" done just before end of warranty, with 2 previous EGR fixes. Also asked the dealer about what would happen out of warranty, and was given what I feel was a reasonable reassurance that Volvo would look at this favourably if it happened. Nevertheless, just paid for the additional year's warranty anyway. Makes more financial sense for peace of mind than changing the car at 3 years.

Also just needed rear pads at 30K. Interestingly, an independent company replacing the tyres recently told me I needed rear discs as well - they were quoting £350! Just had the 3 year service, and the dealer only recommended pads, total bill just over £100 which I thought was OK.

It seems the dealers have been busy today - I've just had my definitive fix done as well. Let's hope it lasts...
