Have a look at this:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=105054

It describes using a small media player to output to the screens - better than a DVD player in my opinion, and something I'm fitting to my RSE system.

If your XC90 is already wired for RSE then you should also be able to get the Audio going into the Aux input of the headunit (you should have a switch between the two front cupholders).

Not sure if this helps but as of today there are three dvd boot located systems (player only) on ebay. There is also a complete new system.

I also have a 2003 xc90 with UK specific 10dvd player
. I purchased it late 2016 and the dvd unit does not work. It has been a tad cold to do much investigation, but I have found out that the 10 DVD unit was designed and fitted for the UK market only and not the normal world-wide option. So on standard wiring
. I have been looking for a wiring diagram but no success to date but will try and sort when weather is better.

Note there should be additional components in the left and right compartments in the floor of the luggage compartment, plus 2x wireless transmitters (Thompson).

I have condidered new head units, but I just simply would like this unit to work.

Hope this helps. John l
