You can buy a joining pipe I did this on mine as it was blowing really bad but only the realise that the back box it bigger then the pipe it joins to so I'll need to get a new exhaust at some point. But it's fine for now

My exhaust has been quite noisy as well lately. When I got under the car to check what's going on I found nothing - everything is tight. Turning on the engine revealed that the part making noise is the middle muffler (photos attached).

It looks like it has outer layers missing, like they rusted away. Or removed intentionally. And if you grab and hold it the noise disappears, so the sound probably comes from it vibrating. Did this ever happen to anyone?

I was thinking of maybe grinding the flange off and using some sort of patch to hold them together unless anyone has any better ideas?

It happened the day after it passed its MOT thankfully!

I haven't yet but you can get a joining pipe. Type flexi exhaust pipe in on eBay and you'll see what I have to fix it. I plan on doing mine next week.

Mine split at the flange by the rear wheel. £400 for a custom made cat-back exhaust in 304 grade stainless steel.

Bargain.

I got a fellow on ebay to make up a flange for the midpipe to the first cat for me so I could remake the rear in 2.5" , here's the listing. Thought I would share the only other site I see for this flange was in Australia. That said it's probably cheaper to get the whole thing done rather than just the midpipe.

I had the same issue with mine. Luckily I had a bit of flange left on both of the pipes so I just bought two split flanges and screwed them on tight right behind the old flanges (or what was left of them). When I clamped the split flanges on, I made sure that they were offset from the original flanges so that I could send a long bolt through without obstruction from one split flange to the other. Before squeezing them together I put a new gasket in and lathered a bunch of high temp gasket sealer in for good measure. It's now been a year and my exhaust is still quiet. Definitely a short term fix though.

By split flange, this is what I mean:

That is a nifty bit of kit, not something I have seen in the UK. Is the price really $114 each as with two flanges needed it would be $228 + postage. If that price is correct it would be cheaper to remove the exhaust and get a local chappie to weld on new flanges.

No, the price listed on this email listing is ridiculous. I think I paid $20 per item for my fix at my local Partsource store

Ok so managed to fix it but could have made it a little easier for myself. if you use this on eBay item:251985669516 then cut as close to the flange on both sides this will work a treat. Access is limited with a grinder in this area and had to use a junior hacksaw to finish the last quarter on both cuts. If you can split the joint before you cut then you can unbolt the back box to cut the flange on this side so much easier. However the bolts are a PITA to take out due to corrosion and I ended up shearing one. So left it in situ and went the hacksaw route.
