Default VOL FCR - Diagnose my diagnostic software

Hi all,

Trying to diagnose an intermittent starting issue here: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=289787

To do so I'm trying to get VOL-FCR but as is common with diagnostic software, getting the bloody thing working is extremely difficult.

I have a 1997 850R manual estate. I bought the following cable:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271036790042

Based on advice in the following thread:

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=289787

But upon opening VOL-FCR 1.3.0.6 and trying to connect to the Motronic 4.4, I get the common "no response from car".

I followed the instructions and installed the drivers, changed the port to COM1, all that. Even tried lowering the port speed but still nothing.

All I've managed to read is the immobilizer which threw up the following: IMM-312 Initiating Signal Absent from ECM.

I believe the R is 4.4? Far from an expert though - just going off what the previous owner said + wikipedia!

97 was the changeover year, so some are 4.3 some are 4.4. You can tell by checking the VIN. Link describing how to read it here.

Though given your problem and quoted error Im almost positive it will prove to be a 4.3 car. Reading errors codes from 4.3s is far from hard - here's a link on how to build a flash code reader for it: click me. Here is a follow up link on what those flashes mean: clicky.

I had trouble connecting to VOl-fcr before I bought a VAG-com 409.1 OBD2-cable which had the correct chip. You need a cable with "FT232" chip.

Edit... You've already bought the correct OBD2 cable....

Okay so I bought an FT232 cable and a laptop with a serial port but still no luck. I managed to read a few things in the immobilizer and instruments sections but cannot connect to the engine ECU.

I'll give the guy who last tinkered with the ECU a call next week and see if he knows anything.

Update on this. I gave the chap a call and he told me the ECU is 4.3, hense why I couldn't connect to it on VOL-FCR (the 4.3 button just prompts me to read the flash codes).

So I made a flash code reader following instructions from this forum and successfully read a 2-4-5 code, which is the idle control valve.
