Temperamental power
Hi guys,
I’ve noticed over the last few days that when cold the engine goes into a sort of limp mode if you try to accelerate too hard. Yesterday it did this then completely lost power and stalled the engine, with an oil light flashing for a second then disappearing. I’ve had the car on the motorway twice in the last week and it’s got to 70 but done nothing after when you put your foot down, but drives perfectly if it’s shut off and restarted again. I also noticed what seems to be a small oil leak below the turbo (the turbo works fine and still boosts after shut off). I believe this is the second turbo the cars had, as it is currently a Garrett unit. The car is an 09 1.6D C30 and I have a feeling this is an oil issue, as it only happens when the engine is cold and the turbo isn’t showing symptoms of failing. Any ideas? . Maybe an obvious comment, have you checked that the engine oil quantity is correct and not low, also the correct grade?
How many miles is the car showing? Hope it's not a worn engine but might be oil low pressure due to wear, you can get this checked with an engine compression test. |

Update
I had this issue again this week and it stayed in limp mode and had an engine light. I've read the codes personally and its given a fuel pressure regulator code and a crank position sensor. After erasing the codes the car drives fine, and doesn't throw the codes back up. Think the cause was me having lead feet

A lead foot should not cause limp mode...
Maybe someone with more knowledge can suggest something good, but from what I know either one of these fail - car wont run. Crank position sensor is quite inexpensive and can be changed easily as far as I know. It is in top left of the engine, one connector and one screw. Fuel pressure regulator is a bit harder to come by, it can be found on ebay but as a used part for something like 100EUR. If you dig around a bit on the net a new one can be also found, but they are around 300EUR or somewhere about there. Since you have a scanner, maybe you can look at fuel pressures to check them. Or if problem repeats change cam belt sensor first since its the cheapest from the two (around 25 EUR) |
