Hi, My S70 2.5 20v petrol auto needs a new battery. I was able to put it on charge and get the car started. I left the car ticking over to replenish the battery and noted after approx. 10 mins it was just coming up to temp with 1/4 tank of fuel. Popped in the house for a cuppa and planned to leave the car for about 30mins or so. Returning to the car it was not running! Tried to start it and it was turning over fine but would not start. After about a dozen turns the bad battery kicks in and I'm out of juice again. The car has been running fine with no issues. Any thoughts please, many thanks.

Hi

Do you have a code reader?

Presume no codes or warning lights?

Apart from the usual suspects, one thing that can happen out of nowhere is that the camshaft position sensor fails.

http://www.volvohowto.com/volvo-850-...sition-sensor/

After that, possibly the ignition switch unit on the left of the steering column. That can sometimes be encouraged to work if you jiggle the key or tap it. But not easy without a good battery.

And then depending on year, the MAF can fail suddenly.

Hope that helps,
Steve

The usual suspects include fuel and spark.

Test for spark by removing a lead and seeing if it sparks when you crank.

I am assuming that the car used to start and run fine prior to this.

If no spark, then suspect the coil pack on the left front wing.

I have access to a code reader later today. No warning lights on dash. I have a new battery on order so will make your checks when that is fitted. Many thanks for your help.

OK, since no codes I would guess no spark caused by coil failure.

Just saying,
Steve

I had this before...
battery working, it sparks, all good...
it was in an astra coupe, and I didn't know that time, that the fuel gauge is waaay too optimistic...

so my 1st question is... did you buy some extra petrol, and filled her up a bit more?
