Thanks Chris
It has a full set of 3 ECU's so it sounds like it's a Jetronic. That means the flash code reader should work?
I'm trying to get some clue as to why the thing won't start.
It's a non-runner since overheating on the motorway with a suspect head gasket (AA man)
There is no sign of any cross contamination of oil and water but theres a big rusty hole in the rad. I'm therefore assuming this to be the cause of the water loss and I might get away with just a new rad, but before buying one I want to get it running again. It turns over and I have fuel and spark but it will not fire. Sorry to go off topic but I'm at my wits end and need a clue to point me in the right direction.

I'd suggest you do a compression check.

And yes the flash code reader will work, pin 3 for the fuel ECU and pin 1 for the ignition.

Compression was my next move but I haven't got a gauge so I'll try to get one later.
I'll have another go with the flash reader and try pin 1 as well but it won't be until tomorrow now - I've got to take the Wife to Ikea today!! (if my old 940 makes it up to Nottingham)
Cheers

Ok, compression test done and readings extremely low, between 70 & 95 !
They increase up to 130 to 145 with oil in bores. I'm going to give up on this and get rid as a non runner. I've not had the car long and a few things I've found (missing bolts, iffy electrics and a thermostat butchered to fit cos' it's the wrong one!) suggest it has been bodged in the past so it's not worth spending any more time and effort on.

I tried the flash reader in port 1 and it worked great 1-1-1 no fault, but still couldn't get it to work in 3.
Thanks for all assistance, I'm now on the lookout for a replacement !

Default Flash Code reader

I've borrowed a flash code reader read the instructions it says I can check EFi,AC, Cruise control can I check ABS too if so what port do I put the pins into ? Will build one over the weekend so I can read the codes off whenever anything is done to the engine.

Put it in a box with a button and a connector, and life is easy:

The car rewarded me for my effort with a 1-1-1.

Too make sure open the ECU box behind the RH headlamp and count the ECU's

For a manual car, if there is one ECU then it will be Motronic 4.4
If there are two then it will have Jetronic.

For an auto car add one ECU (for the transmission) to each of the above.
Thanks Chris! I've just had a look at mine ( 1996 2.5GLT 20v) & it has two ecu's in the box, so = Jetronic & so a flash code reader should work for mine too.

I also have a '96 850 with the B2524S coupled to the 4 speed auto, is the ECU for the engine clearly labelled as to whether it is a motronic 4.3/4.4 or jetronic? Also does anyone know if these ECUs are flash ECUs or not?

Cheers, John.
