Default 850 Glove box

Cn not open the box. I think I must have flipped it shut and papers have become caught in the catch. Any easy solutions?????
Many thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,

I hope your problem is not the same as mine was.

The glovebox on my 850 wouldn't open last week, with my wallet stuffed with £250 fresh from the cash machine inside it. After about an hour of trying to prise it open, I gave up and drove to the dealer to see if they could do or suggest anything.

They said that there is a small lug in the lock mech that tends to snap off and therefore makes pulling the handle do absolutely nothing at all. The only way to get in was to drill a 3" hole through the front of the glovebox and pop the catch with a screw driver. I then had to buy a new glovebox lid and fit it. Cost £94 including VAT :( - or would have been £ 135 if they fitted it.

When I stripped the old cove down, sure enough a round metal lug about 4mm in diameter and 10mm long was rattling around inside. I think that must be the most expensive piece of metal in relation to its size, in the whole car !!!

There is a cheaper way of fixing it.

Basicly wedge the lid open as far as you can.
Then protect the trim round the catch area with duck tape or similar, and saw through the metal loop that the catch locks onto with a taped up hacksaw blade to open the glove box.

Buy a new catch and metal loop, and repair.

Details, in one of the technical driver mags. or do a Google search on the alt.autos.volvo news group.

Good luck
