Knocking noise
Hi all,
Picked up my new XC90 at the weekend, 2011 D5 Auto 58k, and have discovered a few issues I would appreciate some guidance on. I took the car for a test drive and everything appeared fine, drove the car home, 80 ish miles and didn't notice any problems, but after nipping a couple of miles up the road yesterday, a knocking noise started, seemingly from near the offside front wheel area. Now the noise isn't too loud but does seem to be impacted by speed, as in the knocks are further apart at slow speeds and quicker at higher speeds. Not effected by turning etc. Now the other issue, which may or may not be related is park/handbrake. When putting the parking break on and the gearbox in park, take the foot of the foot break and the car rolls back a couple of inches! Not had this on any other auto or Volvo I have had, though this is my first XC90. The garage did fit new discs and pads on the front as part of the sale. Before I go back to the garage I bought the car from, I want to get a better idea of what I am talking about, so hopefully one of you kind people can help Regards. |

First thoughts on the noise is something caught in the tyre so I would check all of them.
The parking brake does have some movement in it, which is meant to help if it freezes up. |

The knocking will have to be found by inspection as clearly it is not normal.

Easy to check tyre issues
Hi just swap the tyres around, if the problem moves you know where it is.

Thanks for advice guys, much appreciated.
Dont remember have the roll on my S60 D5 Auto, but if its normal I can live with that. I will try swapping the front wheels over and looking for any obstruction as the first thing and take it from there. Thanks again |

When I went to swap the wheels around to see if I could find anything or if the noise moved, I found all 5 nuts were loose! Clearly the individual who changed the discs only did finger tight on the one side. All sorted now, thanks for your help everyone. |

Phew!! - Bet you're glad you got that sorted quickly.
I had a similar problem with one of my Saabs (9000 CSE) - had been in for new front tyres. I was driving slowly along my road (fortunately) and it felt "loose" at the front with clonking noises. Both front wheels were flopping about - the bolts had come loose on the 5 mile trip back from the tyre place (no names no pack-drill but I live near Basingstoke and this place is "the busiest tyre site in the world") I go somewhere else now... Cheers Dave |
