Does the car have dipped headlights that come on with the sidelights ?
My 940 has a realy on the drivers side A post just above your right foot.

If it's got one theres a chance that the relay is stuck, had this before with a renault I owned.

Otherwise it could be a wiring problem, does the headlamp circuit have a realay fitted anyway, might be that.

no,, it has day running lights that come on with ignition thats poition 1,
Then one turn of the light switch ie pos 2 ,turns on the parking side lights ,which replace day running,
Then,3rd position for the dip/low beam and side lights,,

,the head lights ,low beam is glowing when not switched on even with the main lighting switch removed onlly way it stiopped was with the ignition turned off all the way or with fuses 19 and 20 removed

I had this years ago with a Datsun 180B (incidentally a car that shared many engineering and durability values with Volvo, sadly rust resistance not being one of them) and it was a fused bulb element that had re-fused back together again. Strangely, this was on both sides and I saw at least one other 180B similarly affected.

Hope this helps

I didn't explain very well sorry.
Not sure about the ignition switch position but while driving my car you have sidelights and headlights on but not at full nightime brighness.
The daytime running lights (sidelights and dimmed healamps) are wired seperate to the headlight switch so they always come on.

I found that by removing the relay I mentioned the headlights can be switched off while driving just leaving the sidelights on. I was thinking that if there was a fault with this relay the headlights might stay on.

I don't know if earlier cars are the same though, it might be worth checking.

hii on mine day lights are on no matter what,,as they should be,
they are the same as the side/parking light only it is the 21w element that lights ,
the side light is the 5w element,,
now all lights work as they should apart from the low beam has some power going to them (when they should be off) but only enough to make them glow a little bit, like when you have a short circuit
