A/C pulley bearing spec?
Having replaced PAS pump along with the Aux belt and tensioner I now need to do the air con bearing, the clutch is working fine but I have a fairly constant chirpy squeal that stops if I dribble some WD40 in behind the aircon pulley.
2004 D5 XC90 is not going anywhere till this is sorted. Would very much appreciate if someone could confirm whether the XC90 a/c pulley bearing spec should be 35x55x20 My alternator pulley seems sound although as I am at 159k miles I will change that in the next few weeks too. I found a really useful post from D5meister in the V70 forum https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=220277 which states the bearing as NSK 35x55x20 I also found an excellent step by step by MWMan in V60 https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=248905 this mentions the same spec but also provides a link to a different spec - 'NSK Clutch Bearing 35x55x20' ....'bearing-35x52x22'. Agree not to drive it until sorted, this pulley took many D5 engines after the serp belt wrapped around the crank pulley.
Can't answer your question but I put a video on youtube with this job on the S60 + a Ebay link to a quality bearing. While there we also adjust the clutch gap by removing the correct shim. I think the A/C pulley has rather a 'sanding' sound, not chirping. Chirping would be more the tensioner pulley. Anyway with the belt off you'll see which of the pulleys needs attention.

Easy job to change the bearing, saves a load of cost on a new compressor and de-gas/re-gas.
I did one a few years ago on my sisters '02 V70 D5, I couldn't ascertain the size so I bought a second hand compressor for £30 and took the bearing out of that. However.... given they are about a tenner each why don't you just buy both and return the one you don't need? Also it is possible to remove the clutch assembly and measure the bearing without dismantling it.

Thanks for the replies and the link to the video, the tensioner idler definitely had problems but since I replaced it the cheep...cheep...cheep has changed to a drawn out gentle screeeeeching. PAS definitely had problems but replacing that did not get rid of the noise. A/C bearing, tensioner, alternator bearing and PAS should all have been replaced by now so I will keep working my way through them.
Hopefully the pullers I ordered will arrive today and I can start taking the air con unit apart then extract and measure the bearing. I will post the dimensions in here for future reference. |

My a/c bearing is definitely 35x55x20.
The old air con bearing was a bit rough, having replaced it I now have a much quieter gentle squeal that doesn't start til 2000 rpm which makes it a bit tricky to work out where it is coming from on my own. Next step alternator pulley. what fun. |
