Hi!I am new at the forum and I have a few questions about my 1995's 940tic auto saloon:

-First of all, this is my first auto and I was concerned about its idle speed. When hot it's around 900rpm and when cold it's around 1500-1600rpm in P or N, since in D or R, with the brake on, it slows down to 750rpm and 1200rpm respectively. Is this normal in automatics?

-Other thing I had stated a few times was that in hot summer with the break on, airco on and the lever in D the revs fall to near 500rpm and the car starts to shake and plum black smoke between shakes. Nowadays on cold morning starts it started to do something like that on the first seconds and it smokes more than I remember on a cold start! When it shakes the revs oscillate a little! Any Ideas of what could be?

-At last, there is a hose from the top of the engine to a pipe in the middle of another between air filter and turbo. Between both there is a large oil leak and the first hose is loose. Shouldn't be there a pipe clip or something to attach both?

I will appreciate your opinion!

Thanks

P.S. There is a leak around injector #3 from the fan, I thought it was from a leaking return line substituted a few months ago but it seemed that grew. Could that be related to shaking?

Viva, caro companheiro luso

Já li neste fórum que "if it works don't touch it...".

Telmo

translation: probably some "blow-by" can make a breather pipe leak some oil...

Well, seems that the next thing to do is check injector #3 and, eventually, do a compression test (depending on the bill)!

Still remains if the breather pipe has a pipe clip and if the idle is the correct one.

Obrigado pela dedicação, tem realmente ajudado! (very grateful for Telmo's help and concern)

Update: Before went to a workshop I clean the area and there is no leak on the #3, this leads me back to the beginning... There is also no sign of blow-by from the cap on the top of the valve cover. I need some advice what to do next (avoiding unnecessary expenses)!

Well, I can see you did not perform the compression test, that should help to make an idea of the engine wear, but does cost few dozen euros...
Besides, you can also check (in a test apparatus) the injectors for clogging/bad spraying - can also cause the poor idle and black smoke in D selection/AC on.

Default Tickover speeds

Correct idle speed when warm for D24T/Tic, is 830rpm
Correct idle speed when cold for D24T/Tic is at least 200 rpm more than when warm.
If your car is smoking when cold (blue/grey smoke) then the cold start device is not advancing the injection timing enough. That is to presume all other things are oK, ie fuel pump injection is set correctly, injectors are set correctly, air filter is good, etc, etc.

Cold start device justs increases fuel supply as there is no adjustment on timing as it is a diesel. For the same reason there is no throttle controlling airflow, it is wide open all the time.

All the best, Peter.
