V40 with renault gearbox.
Hello,
My friend has v40 with 1,6 gasoline 80kw engine and renault gearbox. My question is it possible to swap gearbox like from 1,8 gasoline. Its like 2nd ir 3rd gearbox with which can not proper work. I understand that if it is old, it just gets worn out..but this is bad. I read in another topic that 1,8 gasoline gearbox is volvo gearbox. Is it better? If swap gearbox and shift with rods..is it possible? |

I had a 1997 V40 with the Renault box and covered 370,000mls without any problems apart from about 5 sets of gear linkage bushes. I now have a similar V40 with the Volvo box. Again no problems, but the Renault box had much smoother gear changes. Not sure if you can swap boxes, I imagine you can, but would need the change linkages and the driveshafts etc are different, so a fair amount to swap over.

My year 2000 1.8 (1783cc) V40 had a renault gearbox. When i needed to change the gearbox, i couldn't find one for the 1.8, so i had to fit a renault gearbox from 1.6 S40/V40. The renault gearboxes use the same driveshafts & clutch, etc, so are a direct swap with each other. The only difference is the gear ratios are a little different, so my 1.8 is a bit more revvy than it was with the original box, but it makes very little difference,.. as far as i can tell ?
I'm sure it's possible to fit a volvo gearbox to a car that has a renault box, but its probably more hassle than it's worth as you will need to swap drveshafts, clutch, gear linkages/lever,starter motor, mountings etc. You would be better to get a donor car with all the bits available to do it this way. |

Magnuz is correct on all fronts.
The Renault gearbox was only fitted to the 1.6 and 1.8 engines, inc. BiFuel. Changing to the VOLVO box IS possible but only economical if you had a donor car. Too many hidden gems (gremlins) in there! There would be little or no gain. You would be better off searching for another Renault gearbox from a V40, DONT be tempted to buy a Laguna/Kangoo gearbox. There are 2 types of top mounting (narrow/wide), clutch can be cable operated and the bell housing can be flat or chamfered at the bottom, a minefield. I have been there and chased all the options. In the end I scrapped my V40 BiFuel because the gearbox was getting louder and louder, then appeared the dreaded overrun blue smoke of death! She had to go.
