Default Which diesel engine and model year to buy?

Hi
I figure the definitive guide to Volvo diesel engines must be buried on this website somewhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm looking to buy a diesel variant, likely a V60. I'm less fussed about model year, and much more interested in buying the best and most reliable engine version.

I understand the five cylinder models are better than the four, but can someone confirm?

If so, are the 2.4's better than the 1984 cc versions, and is it better to go for a certain Euro version, for the purposes of avoiding EGR and DPF problems?

Can someone advise?

Thanks

l prefer the 5 cylinder over the 4.

as for 2.4 or 2.0, I'm not sure which I prefer, in Auto I think I prefer the 2.0, it just matches the gearbox really well to me, smoother experience, in manual, either one works great!

As for being better, I'm not so sure, I would imagine you would have less trouble over time with the 5 cylinder, but in all honesty, I'm not sure there is any truth in that other than emotional attachment to the 5 cylinder's as I've owned them for so long!

I really like 5-cylinder Volvos, and when I went looking for my current car, it was a choice between a 5-cylinder D4 and a 4-cylinder D4. In the end I bought the 4-cylinder version, however, because it was newer and it offered better performance. Also 5-cylinder D4s with the final facelift are very, very rare.

If I'm honest, the installation of the 4-cylinder VEA engine in the V70 is so good that I'm rarely aware that there are only 4 cylinders under the bonnet. It really is that good. Conversely, it's more obvious in the V60 although not unpleasant. My wife's 2015 V60 D3 R Design Lux is a great car to drive.

Regarding serious longevity, I'll have let you know another time since my V70 has only done 122K so far.
