I have always found the belt lines up with the teeth when feeding it from the crank to the inlet pulley without having to adjust the cam pulley - sometimes it needs a little adjusting between the inlet and exhaust cam - but only a fraction. Loosing the setting due to the cam springing would not affect it as the cam can be turned back to line up the marks without issue.
The belt then feeds around the water pump and idler and tensioner - i have only ever used genuine Volvo belts and they always 'only just fit' over the tensioner and idler. I assume you are adjusting the tensioner correctly and getting the little indicator to sit centrally within the two markers - if this is so the belt will be correctly tensioned.

Both cams spring off marks, VCT pulls the intlet and the exhaust sprung around due to the valve spring tension , must have been just on the heel of the cam.
I set them back to timing mark but given that you are lining up with a wide notch in the cover you can be a fraction of a tooth out which won't mess up timing but will change slack in the belt. i guess so long as the teeth all fit in to sprockets when it on with no visible slack its probably ok. But the crank/idler/inlet side is pretty tight even without the tensioner set Yes, following the tensioner settings procedure as per the Haynes (and various other sources) |

One thought I did have...
Where should I set the belt on the crank sprocket. The sprocket seems much wider than the cam sprocket. It's possible to set it flush up against the pulley, in the centre, or towards the back so the edge of the belt runs under the casting (oil pump??). Perhaps where it is positioned on the crank sprocket dictates where it will sit on the cam spockets? |

another possible problem. I am beginning to wish I had never laid eyes on this car
Should the tensioner needle move when i change engine speed or blip the throttle? I have seen video online where this happens but mine doesn't move at all I followed the correct tensioning sequence and when i push on the belt it moves freely back and forth but stays completely still when running no matter what engine speed or throttle position |
