C30 Brakes : Brake Pads/Disc costs

Unfortunately you can't presume that because ATE made the brake system then ATE aftermarket pads will be the exact same as the Volvo OE pads.

You have three choices,
Volvo OE parts
reputable aftermarket brake parts from Ferodo,Textar,Delphi,Bosch etc..
budget brakes

For me it would depend on the age and cost of my car as to what route I went,
If my car was nearly new or expensive I would only buy Volvo OE parts.
If my car was over say 5 or 6 years old I would buy quality aftermarket parts.
I would never buy budget brake parts as the small saving is not worth the risk.

Even budget brakes should 'work' (as any brake pad sold in Europe must have been tested/approved with the simple ECE R90 performance test) but the problem is you have a higher chance of noise/wear/dust/performance issues.

Regarding anti-noise shims as mentioned above, fabric (fibreglass reinforced rubber) shims were really only a cosmetic anti-noise shim and are not used anymore. Quality anti-noise shims used by the majority of the OEM's and premium aftermarket are rubber steel rubber composite, and/or stainless steel. If the pads have anti-noise shims then you shouldn't be covering the back of the pad in copper grease.

In my opinion If you aren't 100% confident on working on a brake system you really shouldn't be working on a safety critical part of you car.

In the past I've got a set of Mintex discs for about.. £50 for a pair and then another £40 for a set of genuine Volvo brake pads.. So I reckon you could replace the fronts and rear discs and pads for under £200 - that's parts alone. I'd fit myself, you'd also need to bleed the brakes so another £10-20 for the brake fluid.

Try Euro Car Parts. They have a sale on at the moment if you use their discount code. They sell good brands like Pagid & Mintex & you'll get decent parts at a reasonable price. £1,000 for a brake job is just outright ludicrous.

I've used various brands over the years but recently tried Apec and have I'm very impressed. I'm sure the fronts and rears came in at around £120 for my V50 and 6 months on, no signs of corrosion and the performance and resistance to fade is excellent. Definitely worth considering.

BTW, I noticed an earlier post mentioning copper grease. Just to be clear, this shouldn't go anywhere near brakes as it can cause piston seals to swell and cause brake binding.

There is specific brake grease that avoids this issue

I've tried them all throughout Volvo ownership and the only ones that I put on now are Volvo.

They last a long time, they don't emit a huge amount of dust and most importantly for me, they never squeak which almost all aftermarket units do for me over time.

Buy them from Volvo, get them fitted elsewhere if you're not happy doing it yourself.

The rewind tool is an absolute bargain! Got one for christmas and the ease of use makes it a pleasure to do the back brakes.
I recently replaced my front discs and pads. Bosch discs and Ferodo pads £100 from Autodoc.
I've used Autodoc a couple of times and they're pretty good. Pricing is good. Allow 10 days for stuff to come though.
