both good but a stout block of timber is just as good if not better although more difficult to store i use both methods dependant on the job in hand

What was interesting for me is the more robust looking ones withstood x2 the stated load (I have a Clarke branded set like this). That's a 100% safety margin... But the cheap looking foldaway ones withstood considerably more!

Many years ago my dad did testing on chains. He had a great pice of RSJ set in the back garden.
I am pretty sure that to pass a load test they had to withstand at least twice the stated load capacity of the chains so I am not surprised that the axle stands gave at least gave the same load margin.
