Default £260 for a new key fob?!

Hi all, Having a nightmare with my xc90 at the moment! Story is I took it in for its MOT, all fine etc, but when I went to pick it up the battery was flat. The mechanic ( local garage not volvo) jump started it. But ever since then the buttons on the key fob have not worked. I have two fob and neither work so it is a bit of a coincidence I think. I told the local garage about it and they said I would have to go to volvo. This I did. They replaced the batteries but said they cannot be reprogrammed and I need new ones at the above price. Does this sound right? Can I programme them myself or buy them cheaper else where? The price included some software thing too.....
Hope someone can help me, am totally useless with this stuff xx

Have a look here at post number seven. He was either very lucky or the garage took pity on him.

Thank you for that - trouble is I am running out of time as the car is sold and being collected at the weekend. I need the keys to work by then! May check that sensitive battery thing though.
xx

Bugger, I am going to be frantically searching the car and house tonight to make sure I did not throw away that empty plastic bag with a bar code on it that was hanging around.

So the remote doesn't work, but I guess that however annoying you can still use the key to unlock the central locking, and the key then starts the car?
I bourght second hand and it's got two working key's (although one of them doesnt fold into itself) No barcodes or valet key though which is somthing which would have been usefull! so my question: "will i ever be stranded, or will I be able to use the key... as a key!"
