Smile PCV Service?

Hi all, first time poster and Volvo owner.

I recently bought my P-plate 850 T5 CD and I think I may have the PCV blockage that seems to be common on these engines.
I get the smoke coming out the oil dipstick when the engine is running.
However, I did a search on here for PCV and nothing came up??

Not sure if the search term is too short or something but it doesn't return any errors, just says no results.

Anyway, what's the quickest/easiest/cheapest way to get this issue resolved?
I have absolutely no tools or space to work on the car so I'll need to get it done at a garage. What's the going rate for this kind of work and can any garage do it or is it worth taking it to a Volvo (independent?) specialist?

Can anyone recommend a reputable place near Twickenham?

Thanks in advance,
Craig

Hi Welcome!

Shame you haven't got the room to do this yourself, as a kit from FRF Volvo is the best way, as you get everything you need. Also it is DIY do-able, just a bit fiddly.

I'd go for a Volvo Indy if I was you........ Or another possibility would be to get the kit from FRF, about 100 quid IIRC & search for a mobile mec' in your area.... but be sure you are happy he knows what he is doing

Its a fairly basic job for any independent garage. The inlet manifold has to come off so you may as well replace the plastic fire trap tank and the whole thing.

Costs of the parts is around £80 retail. Labour varies around the country but I would expect to pay about £120. So £200 all in.

Have a read through my thread below so you understand whats involved and avoid being ripped off.

Seconded - get the kit from FRF Volvo in Swansea, if you give them your VIN and/or reg number they'll provide all the bits you need, quote code C3 for a VOC discount, you won't get the parts cheaper anywhere else.

I'd agree, get a decent indy or mobile mech to do the job if you can't do it yourself. Keep searching on here, there are lots of threads about it, also hopefully some others will come on and point you at the appropriate threads.

Also have a look in the "Articles" section, there's at least one detailed "how to" in there. Look here:

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=79

There's a guide for Normally Aspirated (N/A) but most of the fiddly bits are the same for a turbo.

Cheers

Thanks very much for the quick replies guys.

How would you go about finding a mobile mech?
Anyone recommend one in the Twickenham area?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried Carpenters in Molesey? Always very helpful.

Changed the whole kit myself and while not difficult was a bit fiddly as some parts did not dismantle as expected. e.g. there is a clip which holds the plastic fuel feed to the manifold (I think) which I could not detach, despite what the instructions said, so had to leave in place.

Also, when refitting the manifold support bracket to the engine block I tightened the screws fully and later discovered that I had to leave out the bolt that goes through this bracket and into the bottom of the manifold as the holes did not align.

I have used MKG3000 in Twickenham for jobs I cannot be bothered to do myself (at my age laying in the gutter under a car is no longer the fun it used to be, particularly when it is wet / cold). It is the workshop you need to speak to, not the car sales site, and is by Strawberry Hill Station. They changed the front spring upper bearings/mounts on a V40 for me when I supplied the parts. They also charged me less than they had quoted as they did the job quicker than expected.
