I think you will find that the box is a 5 speed, if the lever postion includes '4' then it's a five speed if only '3' then it's a four speed.

The five speed holds 7.5 lts of JWS 3309 fluid, £100 from Volvo does not seem enough for a full flush as they were charging £18 a litre. Maybe only the 3.5 ltrs in the sump was changed.

Most people seem to use the Vauxhall 93160393 fluid at around £8.

The symptoms do sound a bit like a PNP problem have you tried moving the lever through the whole range smartly for around 20 strokes to try and clean the contacts?

I still say buying the code reader is the way to go.
