The last 6910 km I've kept track of every centiliter diesel my car has got. The math shows an average consumption of 8.17 l/100 km. The trip computer, reset when this test started, claims 7.5 l/100 km. It's a bit optimistic.
This with an XC70 D5 AWD automatic. About 1500 km of the distance has been with a 1300 kg trailer, sometimes with weather cover up, sometimes folded down. Some short caravan movements have happened too, but they were short. Driving is everything from 250 km trips on highways to inside villages. And some light off-roading. |

2.4D seems pretty rare here
Interesting thread!
I've been running a V70 2010 model 2.4D auto with 175hp and 420NM since May 2010. It was sold for a while alongside the 205ps D5 model. Lower power but similar torque. It's now done 23k miles at 37.95mpg (best is 43.04 for a tankful, worst is 31.30). I tend to do more short journeys and drive with hand controls as I'm a wheelchair user. I have to change cars this year but the only auto V70 I'm offered is the D2 so I'll probably end up with a Passat 2.0TDi as I'm not sure that 1.6D makes a lot of sense. I see the current V70 2.0 comes in D3 and D4 flavours (136hp and 163) and I'm guessing the D3 at the top of this thread equates to the current D4 at 163hp? Anyone driven the new D3 136hp model? Or has anyone driven the 115hp 1.6 D2 model? I'd love to stick with another V70 but I'm hooked on torque and don't think I could bear the D2. I asked my dealer to source a demo model but seems Volvo UK don't run an auto model demo just yet. |

I had a '12 V60 1.6 D2 115bhp as a courtesy car whilst mine was in for service. Initial reaction to it was every bit as good as mine on town roads, very nice low down torque and apparant power...until I got onto a dual carriageway followed by motorway when the lack of bhp was really noticable. It really runs out of "puff" quickly. I'm still getting used to diesel engines and the low down torque they give, but I feel they give a "false" sense of power. i.e. they make me think that power will run all the way up the rev range (like my M3's used to!) pull out to overtake and then quickly pull back in behind the vehicle as the power has vanished! To be honest, I love my D3 to death but given the choice if I change it I'd probably be tempted to go for the 163bhp model next time (plus I'd love to give the 2.4 D5 a try) I really miss the extra bhp in the higher rev range (I had an S60TS for 8-10 years previous and really got used to that power after coming out of M3's) HOWEVER, I did purchase this D3 to make my commute to work cheaper, its certainly done that 2 fold, so I'd really have to weigh up whats more important to me. |

On the fuel consumption topic, I've now done 53k miles. Last tank on a brim to brim measure (took 69 litres) gave me 743 miles. I just did a 230 mile motorway trip, car empty, apart from me, tyre pressures on 225/50/17s at 32psi all round and it gave me an indicated mpg of 54.6 with cruise control set at 73 mph. I've had my 2009 2.4 v70 for a month now and love it - far more comfortable than my v50
The v50 would pretty much do 47 mpg no matter what. The v70 is doing 37. My driving is all A and B roads with virtually no dual carriage or motorway. I'll probably get it chipped for some more overtaking ability and hopefully gain some more mpg when driving 'normally' |

Intresting reading I am due to pick up our first Volvo this Friday, Its a 2009 V70 D5 Auto.
On the test drive I reset the trip comp and got 39MPG over a 15 miles run easy enough. Richard... |

I have had my 2012 D3 (163) for 1 month now (bought 8 months old with 25k miles on the clock) and I am not getting the sort of fuel consumption I was expecting.
My commute into Manchester isn't the best but I only averaged 33.33mpg on a full tank (418 miles / 57.01 litres to re-fill) My second tank full included a trip to East Yorkshire (Fully loaded with family, dog and christmas 'stuff') returned an average of 37.93mpg (530 miles / 63.53 litres to re-fill) Overall I have averaged 35.75mpg (still, it is better than the 23mpg I previously averaged in my Alfa Romeo Brera 2.2 petrol) I have a trip to Devon coming up next week so will see what the fuel consumption is like is for that. |

I also have a 2012my D3, albeit mine is an S80. I got my car 5 months ago with 5K on the clock and she is now on 20K. At the start I was getting around 50mpg; economy has gradually improved and, since ~19K, I have been getting 55-60mpg regularly. I don't push it all that often (okay, red line once or twice a week to help the engine bed in and loosen up, but only towards the end of the commute home when the engine is fully up to temp), doing around 55 on the a-roads and 65-70 on the motorway for the 65 miles each way for work. Split is roughly 45 miles cross country followed by 20 along the M27, taking approximately an hour and a half each way. I did take her up to Scotland in August when she had about 7K on the clock. There were 3 of us in the car, fully packed with holiday kit (boot was chocker, should have gone for the estate) and 2 adult mountain bikes on the roof. Doing 70-80 on the motorway and lots of A-road driving whilst there and average dropped to 40-45mpg. Might be worth mentioning to the local dealer once you've done Devon if it's no better. |

It would be worth knowing what average speed was showing on both the above cases , it is far more informative as to why those figures are so good/bad ..
If you leave your displat on Instantaneous mpg that will show you when the car is doing well or bad .
