Question XC70 AWD - how to test it?

Hello everyone,

I'll be looking at XC70 d5 auto 2005 during the weekend.

1. Could you please tell me how can I check if the AWD is working properly?
2. Is it possible to diagnose the problematic spline without taking things apart?
3. What MPG do you realistically get out of XC70 d5 163bhp AWD?

Please advise what else I should be looking at apart from typical S60/V70 issues?

Cheers,
Matt

Regarding (3), my 07 185bhp D5 6-speed auto XC70, last of Ph2 so same as your potential purchase give me 37-38MPG (real calculated) on mixed driving but biased towards longer runs. The OBC readout is 42MPG.

As for the AWD, if it's a dealer car, then ask to see the computer logged service history for any AWD issues. As for real testing, other than trying to start on wet ground while having someone watching for front wheelspin, I'm not sure but others hopefully will be along with better info.

Otherwise, over & above the checks on any potential car purchase, as it's an AWD, check underneath carefully for evidence of any underbody damage through over enthusiastic 'offroading'. Also check for accident damage as potentially, it's more likely than a V70 if the car has been 'offroaded'.

I've had my XC70 for about 4 months now and gone from 36k miles to 48k miles, done one oil change at 40k miles and looking to do an ATF change on the 6-speed TF-80SC but otherwise had no issues so the XC looks to be a good car.

I get around 33 to 35 mpg out of my V70 AWD D5 163 auto 5speed . This is with a far amount
Of short trips , it dose get in to the mid 40's on a long run. This is at the pumps not off the trip
computer.
I have just changed my angle box becuse of a striped spline caused by the coupling slive .
Have a look to see if it looks like it has been replaced. If you can get under the car , try turning
the prop shaft , it should not turn if the car is in park.
Regards Rogerb.
