That's the point, it's not meant to be. The question is which is better in winter conditions, a 2WD on winter tyres or AWD without?

2WD is more economical, quicker, cheaper to run. So if you can get good performance with a 2WD using winter tyres then you are going to save money and be safer than if you bought an AWD and stuck with the summer tyres.

Obviously AWD with winter tyres is the best bet but not what everyone wants or can afford.

Present company excluded, my observations are that many 4WD/AWD drivers are less incline to shod winter tyres in the misplaced belief that their vehicles can handle anything thrown at them.

I witnessed that last year outside my house where a number of X3/X5/Q5s got stuck on the hill because their summer tyres had let them down in the snow

I wouldn't say that I enjoyed sailing past in my XC60 with winter tyres, but then again ...
