I've never had my cars MOT'd and serviced at the same garage or at the same time. I use the MOT as an interim mechanical check. Never since the MOT system started have I needed to have work done at MOT time although I have had a couple of advisories that I had done at my own convenience.

Just got mine MOT'd on Saturday. Passed without advisories which pleased me no end. Done by Halfords on a £29.99 deal via internet.
Would have thought they would have at least found something to make their money back on, or am I just being cynical?

One point that floated through my mind as I was waiting was the price. The Gov max charge for an MOT is £54 or so. The garage says it takes an hour. I paid £29.99.

Rather makes a mockery of the labour rates that a main dealer charges as its not like they have dedicated MOT only technicians is it?

If mots are a safety thing why are pre 70s cars with rubbish brakes, rubbish handling and rusted through floor pans exempt?

You might want to look at this
https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...112_150514.pdf
As far as I'm aware the only blanket MOT exemption relates to vehicles manufactured or registered before 1st January 1960.

If an MOT tester would like to elaborate/advise please do so for clarification and/or correction.

Sorry to read that, although having experienced three different Volvo dealerships I have to say they do vary in quality rather, but I've always been happy to travel to get decent service and fortunately my second closest dealer - Caffyns in Eastbourne - appears to be a really good outfit staffed with enthusiastic people who know what they are talking about.

Unlike other Volvo dealerships "oh, we'll run you to the station" they also willing loan courtesy cars too, a must in my case.

Sadly you will find a dud in all marques of car - in 2004 I had a Japanese built Honda Accord (with their then new diesel engine), which was just about the most shoddily built car I've ever had - it drank oil and diesel and even such mundane items as seat belt mountings disintegrated on it - it simply hadn't been sufficiently re-engineered to take the diesel power plant.

Roy
The club newsletter just reminded me that under the rolling 40 year taxation rule cars manufactured in 1977 are now also exempt from taxation if you apply for HISTORIC status.

I now work for Volvo as a technician and having seen first hand the lack of quality and poor design that's gone into the newer models is appalling. My 1989 740 has no rust on it at all and I did a service on a 2013 v70 d5 with 40k on the clock and the amount of rust is appalling. I'd buy another old Volvo bunnies way a newer one.

I have to admit, I have never really been a Volvo fan, the only reason I bought my C70 was for the folding roof.

I have had several convertibles, but this time wanted a metal rather than a fabric roof, and the only option, if I was to have four full seats was the Volvo. The likes of the Megane, Eos, 3 Series etc were fine if your rear seat passengers had no legs.

But no, I can't see myself buying another Volvo, mine's been in dock now for over a week as they try to find the source of an intermittent misfire-inducing fault bringing up weird messages on the display. Seems it's one or more injectors, and it's only done 33k miles, in which time (I've had it for less than a year) the faults I know about are failures of a roof sensor, a xenon bulb, and the current problem.

I don't think I trust it now.........
