This shows why 2 winter tyres is a bad idea...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7xXDMkVFlE

Back to the OP, I used to switch from 18" to 16" winter wheels on a previous car, my speedo did over-read (or was it under) when compared to a GPS but at 60MPH the difference was about 4MPH or something.

I didn't bother with the software updates when I changed the wheels, even I could manage to add/subtract 3 or 4 MPH from the speedo reading.

They are:
32259068 - 19” 6-Spoke Turbine Silver with Nokian WR SUV 4
for £1400 delivered to my home address from my local Volvo dealer.

No satisfactory explanation for the software except:
"When changing to new wheel dimensions, new software must be downloaded. Updates speedometer, steering gear and tyre dimensions. Ordered according to separate procedure and downloaded using VIDA."
which is just a direct quote from the website!

That is a good price. Carlisle Volvo are doing the same but at 1500 quid through ebay. I rang my local.dealer and they quoted about 2.5k for just the rims. Must try them for the winter wheel package and see if they will match 1400....

9 of the best Winter tyres for the UK mainly and some for more permanently snowy regions.

The explanation is clear to me. But it may not be to your liking.

From Volvos website on wheels...

When changing to new wheel dimensions, new software must be downloaded. Updates speedometer, steering gear and tyre dimensions. Ordered according to separate procedure and downloaded using VIDA.

That’s today’s date in American parlance

I understand the explanation on the website but I would like to know why. With less than 1% variance to rolling circumference I cannot see why the calibration of speedometer or odometer needs to be changed.

If the tyres were wider I could understand changing the steering to avoid fouling the suspension or chassis but why if the tyres are 4cm narrower.
