Default S40 Stop/start

Just got a 2010 S40 1.6D, my first Volvo, and have been told that the stop/start system doesn't work when the outside temperature is 0C or below as it would be inefficient to stop/starting in the cold. Is this correct ?

The stop start makes a decision as to when to operate. Various things may prevent it working such as low charge, or many electrical items working (eg air con, wipers, stereo.heated seats etc) or sometimes when it is very cold.

Regards

"The engine does not auto-stop
Even if the Start/Stop function is activated, the
engine does not auto-stop if:
• the driver has opened the seatbelt's
buckle.
• the car has not stopped completely.
• the car has been reversed and reverse gear
is disengaged.
• the engine does not have normal operating
temperature.
• outside temperature is below freezing
point or above approx. 30 °C.
• the environment in the passenger compartment
differs from the preset values -
indicated by the ventilation fan running at
a high speed.
• the capacity of the battery is below the
minimum permissible level.
• battery temperature is below freezing point
or above approx. 55 °C."

Thanks for all that. Given what's been written I'm leaning towards the battery, either not reaching its optimum temperature or or it needs charging, as it was 3C outside and none of the other things were happening. Down to Halford's then !

It wouldn't be the main battery as there is a secondary battery which is used for re-starting the car, if its a 2010 car then presumably its still under warranty, so nip into your local dealer and ask them to plug it in to see what the issue is.

Just discovered that the stop/start kicks in when I stalled the car, pressed the clutch and it started up. Seems like the secondary battery to me ?

mtilling at Bells Main Dealer in Northampton deserves a medal. It's great to hear this stuff from "the guy who knows". I'd call in there if I lived nearer, but my Northampton days (I'm ex Carlsberg) are over. Thanks again.

All the secondary battery does is keep the car's electrics going whilst stopped , leaving the main battery fresh to start the engine ..
Dont go to halfords for a battery , a genuine volo one is cheaper .. don't go buying batteries before youa re 100% sure yours is faulty .
Talking of batteries the stop/start batteries are special AGM batteries .
You are better off seeing the dealer , they have experience of why the stop/start doesnt work now after 2 years .
The reason for not stopping ( as well as hoards of other data ) is stored in a memory to read out .
Sometimes you can get it working again by disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes ..

I don't have a Volvo stop start by my we do have a VW Touareg with stop start and that doesn't stop all the time.

When did Volvo start doing stop start? I didn't think it was more than 3 years ago so therefore the car and it's batteries would still be under warranty.
