Which power steering fluid to use
Can somebody please give some advice on what grade of power steering fluid to use on a 2004 plate D5 (165bhp) XC90 please.
I thought it should be: CHF11S but upon reading the manual (p127) it says ATF: http://apps.volvocars.us/ownersdocs/..._09a.htm#pg130 I'm now confused, as somebody pointed out, old ATF goes redish and old CHF goes redish also so thats no real help. From what I've read I expected to use CHF11S but the manual says ATF which seems to be against what others say. Guidance please. Thanks Ed |

The last power steering fluid I purchased was from Volvo. Its surprisingly not expensive and you can be sure its the right one.
My handbook says WSS M2C204-A or product with equivalent specifications. Give Volvo a try? Cheers Sam

Hi Bits,
I did mine myself by watching SiRobb’s video on YouTube (search for Si Robb changing power steering fluid on YouTube and the video comes up). Think it maybe be cheshireD5 on this forum but may be wrong?! Any way I used approximately 2-3 litres like he did in the video and used the same comma fluid which is green. Did it approximately a year ago and it’s still lovely and green and the level hasn’t changed.

A quick google shows you can get a litre for £10.99 delivered via amazon prime although maybe cheaper elsewhere

Don't Know if you can find this brand on your country, but I use WOLF Central Hydraulic Fluid on my 2008 XC90 3.2 AWD ( I use 3 quarts to do the flush)

BTW, Also for my automatic transmission I have made the flush with the same Wolf brand. Vital Tech Multi Vehicle ATF.
You can see it meet the JSW 3309, Toyota Type IV Isaac |

Volvo shift from atf power steering fluid to chf is a scam
Volvo shift from atf power steering fluid to chf is a scam purely to make more money. Mine was changed by the guy I just bought my car off (Volvo V70 D5 2005) from atf (in the manual) to the cgreen chf stuff and it started to leak straightaway. never had any trouble before. The green stuff must be thinner or some other slippery deed but either way it started leaking. Back to atf for me.
The car companies get paid to recommend various stuff including oils so its no wonder they keep moving the goalposts. |
