I've made this suggestion before, but the government needs to void driving licenses every 3-5 years and make all drivers 'maintain' their ability.

There are too many peugeot drivers on the road who have literally zero awareness of anything that is going on around them.

But, final thoughts....

There really needs to be some better education or something to improve motorists driving on motorways.

We seemed to cope quite well without hard shoulders on some of the fastest stretches of A-roads, could it be that driving standards have just simply deteriorated over the last 20 years?
What do you think I'm trying to do here?

Have a look at website. (My signature)

And start with yourself.

Edit:

Or, just sit there, watch documentaries, and complain that it isn't right and SOMEONE should do something.

I won't be surprised at all if that will be your course of "action".

Yeah, alright shi**y knickers - calm down?! You might want to consider your tone when trying to address some support for your cause...

"MY" cause?

I hope to never be in an accident.
More than that, I literally go out of my way and bend backwards to avoid such a situation.

"My" cause wouldn't then be the corridor.
"My" cause would be to get all the complaining "let someone else deal with it" up and acting.

By asking, by showing benefits, AND by shaming.

I come from simple assumption. Or rule, if you prefer:

If you don't do anything, don't complain.

And I've spent weeks researching, planning, learning bl**dy HTML, creating that site.

For your benefit.

For your cause.

For you to have easy way of stopping complaining and doing something.

So if you don't want to participate- fair enough.

Just stop that "someone should do something" mantra.

That "someone" is YOU.

Every. Single. Driver.

Edit:

Now.

It may seem that this post is aimed at roundyuk.

It isn't.
It's aimed at YOU, reading this.

Pull the finger out.

There's limited number of members that provided invaluable advice and ideas.

There's literally just one that took it outside of this forum.

The rest of you?

Time to be ashamed. Or to stop complaining.

I know which one seems easier at first glance.

But ask yourself : "do I want it to be this way? Do I want to think of myself as someone who was given water and couldn't be bothered to drink? "

All it takes is a small move of steering wheel at right moment.

Think.

Can I suggest you read Roadcraft Thomas.

There are 2 ways an emergency driver clears standing traffic given in that.

Understand how emergency drivers are coping with the situation and act to assist them. One size fits all is no good if there are 2 options.

Paul.

With all respect, will me reading roadcraft again make death toll any smaller or ambulance response time any quicker?

And please be aware that "corridor" was meant to apply to ALL roads that have at least 2 lates in same direction.
Not only smart motorways.

Perhaps those people who insist they their highways to hell are safe ought to be made to sit in a broken down car in a live lane for twenty minutes, see if they're so confident afterwards.

It must be petrifying, 'Whippy', always assuming that they haven't been hit before 20 minutes have elapsed.

Regards, John.

I don't drive on Smart motorways very often, living up in the NE of England we are lacking motorways for starters. Last week I drove to Salisbury and back and drove on a number of them. On the Thursday evening I was unlucky enough to hit the Midlands at rush hour and all lanes were opened. It was very clear how reluctant people were to use the hard shoulder. That lane may be open but based on that experience people were not rushing to drive in it. I'll admit, I did not go in there either even though it was virtually empty and available.
