Hi All,
Does anybody know if the early rocker cover, like the one in the link below, will fit a later B230 engine? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../67/B2170s.JPG I want to put a B230FK in and upright position. The early B23 rocker cover has the filler parallel to the cover, rather then at an angle, as with the B230 cars. I'll also post this up on the 700 / 900 bit of the forum. Any info great fully received. Cheers, DJS |

Not without modification. The B2xx version has an oval opening (half of which is in the cover) for where 7/900s had the head-mounted distributor.
EDIT: If you custom-made a semi-circle seal to blank off the bottom half, that would probably work... The other option would be to fit the head from an earlier car. cheers James

Actually, I think they would be interchangeable, bearing in mind the following:
The late cars, as james says, have a round rear seal (its actually a core plug) which is seated between the rearmost camshaft bearing cap and the head itself. The cam cover itself is in effect just shaped to go around the bearing cap. On an early model (i.e. B23) it has just half of this "hole" visible. It has a semi circular seal that sits down into the head and the cam cover is flat and sits on top, also holding the semi-circular seal in position. If you swapped the rearmost bearing cap for one from the earlier engine, as well as the cam cover, and buy a new seal and gasket (still available from volvo last time i checked) I think it would be possible. This is only a theory from a visual inspection yeterday of a late vs early engine. Steve

Nope will not work like that.
B19/21/23. Rocker cover is flat. Head has a small half circle cut out about 1" dia B200/230. Rocker cover has a big 2"+ halve circle cut out. The head has the half circle sticking up and 2" hole going through it. To make the BXX rocker cover fit a BXXX you would need to cut off the halve circle that sticks up over the face of the head and then find a means of filling the remaining half circle. The hole could have a aly plate welded in to fill it. |
