Default Strong burning smell from engine, be aware

So, for about a year after getting out the car after any 10+ mile journey there would be a burning smell from our 17reg xc90 D5.

I complained several times and was fobbed off by the dealer at service, at the various times the car had been in, even in the summer for a replacement powerpulse hose.

A fortnight ago I pulled up at home and smoke started to billow out from under the bonnet. Had the car recovered to the dealer by Volvo assist as simply was not going to risk anything.

Turns out a cracked valve head was leaking oil onto the DPF and it was burning off. Quite an obvious build up of oil over time so i was told.

So, bloody idiot dealers clearly could and should have seen the issue back in March for the service and in the summer for the Powerpulse hose.

New valve head fitted, shepherded out the dealer upon pickup so I could not actually complain to anyone at the service desk.

The car now no longer over rev's at a certain points of my journey and I've noticed MPG is also slightly better.

So 16k miles I've had the rear diff completely replaced for total 4wd failure, powerpulse hose replaced, cracked valve head replaced, multiple software updates for gremlins, auto box software re-set for jerky drive (still not good).

Sigh.

While I fully sympathise with your predicament, 'jmot', it is stories such as yours that make me glad that I do not own a new car.

Regards, John.

Wow A cracked head at such low mileage- must be a mfg defect.. First one I hear of.. Also never read of any diff issues either- there's plenty of T8 ERAD failures- but never heard of a mechanical AWD falling apart at such low mileage.. Yours must have been assembled Friday evening..

Very worrying to hear that... nearly time to ask them to give you a replacement after such levels of disappointment.

The rear diff/AWD failed when the car had just 5k miles on it. Exactly this time last year.

I dunno... sort of glad it's new and all these issues are Warranty. I'd certainly advise anyone I know to not buy a second gen xc90 outside of a full dealer warranty... nooooo sir. Quite a lot of issues building up for when these cars are slightly older...

Well when the AWD failed it was within the allowable time frame for rejecting a car and the dealer failed to fix it twice properly but sorted it fully on the 3rd time it was in.

I was going to reject it then if it had not have been fixed but the dealer was AWESOME and the manager bent over backwards with keeping me in a Disco sport then a demo xc90 the whole time, really good. I think he sensed what was coming..

GUESS WHAT?!?!?!?!

It's shmokin again!!

Pulled up at home and smoke billowing out from under hood. Oil cooking off again, probably the same issue.

Called roadside assist straight away this time who are recovering straight to dealership and organising another courtesy car.

It's funny because on the way home the Mrs and I were discussing getting another Volvo or something else when the lease is up on this. LOL.

What an absolute F'ing joke this xc90 is. Looking into options now, if we have any to try terminate the lease and get something else.

Probably not have any joy on that but who knows...

Bad news. Did they positively confirm they had replaced the head when it was repaired last month or just tell you it was fixed?
