Volvo V70R AWD Motorway Rumble

Hi all,

I'v just purchased my dream Volvo. It's a 99' Laser Blue V70R 4 Speed Auto.

The car has been very well looked after with 122k miles on the clock and extensive service history. Unfortunately it has developed a rumble on the motorway that I just can't place and was curious if anyone knew of any common problems these cars have that could cause it.

It's just had a shed load of work done prior to me purchasing it which should eliminate some possibilities. I've got an invoice from CP Motors where the following has been done:

Full service / timing kit / fluids etc
Both wishbones
New steering rack & track rods / rack ends
Propshaft removal and recondition
Driveshaft NSF recon
Tracking
Various other bits

Also all brakes discs / pads / callipers / hoses have been changed in the last 12 months.

The previous owner has spent over £4k getting it perfect so I'm keep to diagnose and repair this vibration.

The vibration starts around 45-50mph and gets increasingly worse with speed. Hills don't seem to have an affect nor does heavy / light acceleration, it's just a constant vibration / low frequency drone.

It had some aftermarket alloys on so I've bought a pair of factory Volans and had them balanced thinking it could be the tyres but no luck.

Anything to check in the AWD system? Any common problems with these cars that could cause it?

I see you are in Wakefield, as am I. When it's on the motorway and you are getting the vibration is it on tarmac or are you on the concrete sections as the concrete parts cause a drone and small amount of vibration on mine due to the road surface, especially the section of the M1 going North past the M621.

I would check the wheel bearings and cv joints.

If the vibration is coming through the steering wheel then it's from the front end, if it's coming through "the car" it's more likely to be at the rear.

It's constant and starts around 45mph then gets worse. Road surface doesn't make any difference. Seems to be more to the rear but not certain.

I've just had it on the ramp and we can't find anything wrong with it. I have however just looked at the tyres that came with the Volans and there's numerous reviews about droning noise from them on the motorway so I'm going to change them and hope thats the problem.

Hi rockinron if its speed dependent and no noise difference between braking,cornering, accelerating, its the tires.

Hub bearings are definitely worth checking.
Also "Stepped tyres" can cause this.
It can sound similar to worn hub bearings.
I find it's something that happens to rear tyres 90% of the time on FWD cars in particular.

So today I've had a full set of brand new Dunlop Sport Max fitted. Although not quite as bad and the cars running smoother the vibration is still there.

Starts around 45mph and builds up to a pronounced vibration / drone at 70mph.

I'm going to take it for a run on the motorway tonight when it's quiet and see if theres any difference on cornering / hills but I've haven't noticed it before.

Does anyone know if the prop shaft could cause such a problem? According to the history it's just been reconditioned but I suppose it's possible it hasn't been balanced properly.

Also I've read it can be hard to feel a worn bearing due to the 4wd system smoothing out the motion so I'm going to see if I can drop the CV out and check the bearing.

Any other ideas welcome.

Also any Volvo specialists in the North of England that have a reputation for diagnostics?

So I took it for a drive tonight and the noise doesn’t change under cornering / braking / accelerating it’s just a constant drone.

I think it’s time to have a look at the propshaft.
