I read somewhere that the theory of belt drive is that they don't have to be tight anyway - it's the drive that pulls the belt tight onto the pulleys on the side under tension.
Watch a bit of machinery being driven by a power take off with a long canvas belt - the returning belt sags, but the side under tension grips the drums.

Thanks
Looks to me like your alternator is fitted on the wrong side of the adjusting bracket, it needs fitting so the tensioner adjustment bracket is at the back of the alternator front casing.

Hi,

I've read this sentence a couple of times but not sure I follow. Either way, took it all apart today and can't see anything wrong. Photo:

Hi, having a good wiggle and re-fitting the alternator I think 's just a matter of worn bushings.

I fitted some washers after the first part of the bracket, until I get new bushings, and it seems better now.

Thanks

Hi,

Just a follow-up. I managed to replace the alternator bushings this weekend (I'm a busy man!), and it has 90% corrected the belt alignment.

However, the old bushings were so worn this happened, which had been making a noise I thought was the coolant pump failing:

Never ignore noises! So, I have replaced the old coolant pump as well, even though it was fine (after 200.000 miles!).
