but what is the latest definitive fix ?

mine was in recently and had the EGR cooler changed and EGR pipework modified, but EGR valve was not changed.

still a bit confusing as there does not seem to be a standard definitive fix ?

The 'definitive' fix is changing the cooler for the latest version (available for about 18 months now) and rearrange the coolant pipes that feed it. Volvo will only change the actual valve if it needs it (i.e. it's completely gunged or the electric motor is burned out)

I would suggest getting written confirmation before handing over cash.
It's not quite as simple as being sure the EGR has the latest fix.
Volvo will NOT replace the EGR cooler or valve unless there is the appropriate error code showing. I have had the engine warning light twice now at 62k and 72k, both times for a sooted oxygen sensor. This is a £100 fix, but it is NOT covered outside of warranty. Volvo are apparently working on a fix for the sooting issue, but it is not clear to me whether the sooting is related to the better known EGR issues.

For my June 2015 build MY16 car, the EGR cooler is only covered by an official service action until three years, and the EGR valve for five years. See attachment. This worries me because the 'current belief' is that Volvo would honour 'EGR fixes' irrespective of warranty. Perhaps they are hoping that later EGR problems can be 'declined' if the car has been serviced outside the dealer network. For sure, I'm keeping mine with the supplying dealer.

@Nigel - interesting. I would agree that it's a possible get-out if the car is serviced by a non-Volvo dealer after the warranty has expired.

Jut a quick thanks for everyone's assistance on my issue with EGR, it is much appreciated.

Quick update, it does need new t-map sensor as correctly pointed out. Volvo are going to cover half of the cost of this and reimburse me for what I spent on EGR, so good result!

Cheers

Default Xc60 emissions engine warning light

Xc60 now has to go back for a third time to dealer to fix the yellow emissions warning light. Purchased 2nd hand from dealer a year ago 63 plate low 30000 mileage. Light was not on but a few weeks later it came on. Back to dealer who replaced some parts and off it went for 8 months. Car went in for normal service and a few weeks afterwards light came on!! Again car went back but after leaving car all day they said a Volvo approved inspector needs to inspect it before we can authorise replacement of all the parts needed via extended warranty and it will take 4 days work. Talk of a full cylinder head replacement. The mechanic said they’ve had dozens of xc60s back for the same thing and Volvo have still not issued a full recall/replacement policy. All very annoying.

I thought the XC60 only got the VEA engine in 2014?
