Default v70 d5 2.4 2002 could it be blown turbo

hi all after over a years pretty free running with my first volvo it has given up in a big way.
on way to work two weeks ago it started losing power and slowed down to about 30,i pulled over as it was smoking a lot to ,then it started increasing revs on its own right into red on counter and would not switch off on key, yes it sucked all the oil out sump and burned it off after it stopped there were quite a bit oil on road to.
had it towed home topped it up with oil again let it sit for week thinking it might be seized ,tried it this weekend started ok bit smoke but bad oil leek coming down the back of engine it is in line with the turbo but cant pin point exactly yet where it is coming from,gave up with the cold really get my heater going this weekend and start again have to find where this oil is coming from.
it runs good on low revs but dont want to chance it to much in case it gussels the oil again.
most of the research i have done all seems to be pointing to the turbo saying that it never seemed to lose any power before or make any strange noises just wondered if a split pipe or something other than the turbo could cause this problem,appreciate any advice regards joe

I think you might be answering your own questions.
Time to get that turbo off and start digging.
How often were your oil changes and what oil and filter did you use?

I'm surprised it still runs after all that! Most engines after a complete run away are complely knackered! Just shows how strong they are!

+1, that's why I always carry a co2 fire extinguisher just in case!

thanks for the comments so far,been working this morning so only had couple hours on it so far.
took the rubber intercooler pipe off the bottom end about litre oil came out when i took it off, started engine and and a fairly steady run of oil was coming out from inside the turbo side where intercooler pipe goes.
tomorrow i will take turbo off.
changed oil when i got car sep 2014 and june this year not done a lot miles over last year,used 5-40 oil and mann filter.

Not sure about your car but my s60 air box is held together with 6 torq screws under a cover, by the time I've opened the bonnet and undone the screws it would be toast anyway. Actually once I saw a vid on YouTube of Merc c class running away, the guy opened the air box in an attempt to put s rag in it but it blew the cover and filter towards him narrowly missing his head!

Default blowen turbo

got turbo off today,it well gone full of oil and the blades got loads of play.
it is a volvo garrett 716738-2 will that be the right no im looking at and is it the original volvo turbo.

not made my mind up yet what to go for a few on the bay at minute that dont look to bad, seems to be mixed opinions on the ones from abroad.
i have a lot work to do on it yet all the pipes are full oil and need cleaning,
any advice on the intercooler should i take it off and what would be best way to clean it out,picture of my turbo if it uploads

Very important you clean the oil out of the intercooler, and as much as the rest of the system as possible. If you don't, you risk causing serious engine damage...
A word of warning with regards your old turbo... Don't be tempted to have it reconditioned if it's that far gone! We have tried before, and experience tells me it ain't a good idea!

thanks horton for the advice, looking like xmas before i get my volvo sorted company i work for is involved in sorting out thes floods up lake district working flat out at minute,
wish the volvo was still going,got nearly blown off motorway few times in a little 206.
plan is to get fresh turbo,got few local volvo breakers going to try them first at least can check out part before purchase,good few on ebay bit more off gamble .
going to clean the intercooler not sure the best way to clean it should i use de grease or something, have got air line but that might damage it,hoping someone on here might have some good ideas .

I have always used petrol on the land rover intercooler but that has NO plastic parts, just put it somewhere warm to dry before you refit it.
Clutch brake cleaner is an option and may be safer if there are any plastic fittings, again put somewhere warm to dry.
No idea how much Hassel it is to remove it from car as never done the Volvo, but on the land rover the intercooler comes off easily which makes washing it out so much easier. Do the same with the pipes, wash out with petrol but I have no sensors in the land rover pipes.
The last MAF sensor I baught was £320 so I would be inclined to remove them before swilling petrol through the pipes.

Petrol £6 a gallon, clutch brake cleaner £14 a gallon. Strain the dirty petrol through an old pair of tights and use it in the lawn mower/chainsaw/strimmer.
