Pulling my hair out over my XC60 Sunroof
So, here is what happened, after some heavy rain came back to our 2015 XC60 and the roof was in vent position and I'm fairly sure it wasn't left that way. Inside the car the footwells were flooded and there was water in the reading light where the sunroof switch is.
Dried it all out. Sunroof now totally dead, won't budge, no life but the reading lights all work so I'm assuming it isn't a fuse issue. Replaced sunroof switch, still nothing. Now replaced whole reading light housing as that's where the circuit boards are and still dead. Now I am assuming the only option is to replace the motor unless anyone has any other ideas? Questions, has anyone done this before and has a guide? Also, I note on eBay the motors are around £360 for OEM but there are no official ones which are £65 which apparently fit, does anyone have any experience of these? Normally I would just take to an indie but they are booking 3 weeks ahead and with all this rain I need to get the rood shut. |

There is normally an emergency closing procedure for these. I remember the never xc60s have a 4 or 5mm allen key slot in the motor you can turn to manually close the roof in the vent power is lost etc. Can check tomorrow if there is one for the older shape xc60s but is there any sort of slot on the motor a allen key or socket could go on to? |

Hi,
When my sunroof got floaded, sunroof motor was burnt, dead completely. I sourced used one from here: https://www.bildelsbasen.se/en-se/pb...roof-motor/All 3 years latter, still works fine. Regarding opening/closing sunroof: after dismantle overhead lights, you'll see sunroof motor, and at the center there is slot for allen key. Turn it (well, now I'm not sure into which direction - but think it's anti clockwise), until sunroof is closed. Note, that motor can be stuck, so you may need a lot of force to move sunroof. I would suggest to first open sunroof fully, clean drain pipes, then close it. While waiting for new motor, you can take out old one, remove metal cylinder part (that is actually electric engine) from plastic housing and put plastic housing part back. Then you can operate sunroof manually with just allen key When removing and mounting, be careful to not move too much metal cables that move sunroof. After installing new motor, you'll have to ra-calibrate it. Check: https://volvoforums.org.uk/showthrea...10#post2839110 Good luck BR P.S. Check this, I used this procedure: https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...anually-95653/ Last edited by rafikield; Oct 11th, 2024 at 10:00. |

Hiya,
Attached is an image from VIDA. In the middle is a little allen key slot. It's quite difficult to turn, as you're moving the entire glass etc. |

I think it's not weight of sunroof that makes it difficult to turn, but stuck electrical motor.
What most probably happened here: sunroof drain tubes got clogged and excessive water overflowed from sunroof drain channel. That water emptied into overhead light console and also got into plastic housing of sunroof motor assembly. There it made electrical short circuit, which caused sunroof to start opening. Most certainly, electrical motor is burned, and is stuck. Once you manage to remove electrical motor from the rest of assembly, it will be much easier to open/close sunroof manually. Trust me, unfortunately I have hand-on experience on this Just, in my case, sunroof got fully opened before motor burned. Imagine, coming to your car while raining, to find sunroof fully open and to be unable to close it... Ultimately, I found that thread on internet and managed to close it. Had to use very much force for that. Later, I took assembly off, somehow detached electrical motor from the rest, and put rest back. That allowed me to open/close sunroof manually quite easy. It was important to be able to open sunroof to clean drain tubes. @xc60chris: can you smell burnt electricals around sunroof motor? Also, just remembered, there are 2 fuses for sunroof. Main one is under glovebox - check it to be sure. That would be easy solution. In any case, remove sunroof motor assembly and check it and dry properly. Mine one was full of water since plastic housing is not watertight. BR |

I have managed to get the motor out and even when it is disconnected I can't move it, I have even bent the allen key. Is there anyway to close the sunroof with the motor out?

Not that I'm aware of, unless you can take the little gear mechanism off the motor, slot it into the roof assembly where the cables are and turn it that way... |

Thanks everyone for your help.
So eventually I smashed the whole housing up and managed to get the cog out to manually close the sunroof. Wish I had done that sooner. I got a new motor from ebay and put it all back together and it now works fine. I think when Autoglass replaced the glass in the roof they didn't sit it right as it doesn't close flush at the back so I'll have to take it back to them to adjust. Just an FYI when the sunroof motor was disconnected the SRS warning came up. Now I'm put a new motor in the SRS warning has cleared. |
